Also, there is no way to contact anyone while you wait in limbo. You have to be a member to let someone know that you can't get approval to be a member.
The barriers exist because a bunch of trolls came and wreak havoc here a couple of years back. This site is gaining traffic with each coming year so it's needed. That's a barrier for gaining new members.
I don't know about that. I've got a decades old interest in the Chinese military. My motivation for being here is very high. Others might have said: ah well, I guess they just don't approve new members any more and then forgotten about this place. I literally have a quicklink to this server on my toolbar. To my knowledge that isn't something the moderators control.
That said, I can see the benefit of having a waiting period for new members, as it helps to reduce the risk of getting brigaded and increases the likelihood that people who actually want to be here and contribute have the patience for it.

I don't think a week waiting period is standard operating procedure anywhere but on one other forum I've seen and I have been on hundreds of discord servers and many forums.

It said words to the effect of your account is pending the approval of a moderator. There is an above 50% chance I'd say that it also said it would contact me when this has been done. I can't remember it 100%.I understand the rationale for having a waiting period but one week (7 days I'm assuming) does seem a little excessive.
Was there any indication that a waiting period applied? If not I think that would be useful to resolve any uncertainty.
