Is the US shooting itself in the foot by banning Huawei?

What AT&T and Verizon are rolling out are not real 5G. They're more enhanced 4G. China is planning to build a completely separate 5G network, which is going to be much faster, indeed up to 100x faster than the current 4G network.

The former approach is more cost effective in the short term. Chinese approach is more expensive, clearly.

Yes. Until you get a real 5G network, you don't get the benefits of minimal network latency and rock solid reliability, which is what will power new applications.

The article mentions the difficulty for super fast airwaves to penetrate walls. Is that a problem of all cell phone technology?
In NZ the.4g rollout was done by Huawei and yet I know of buildings where one cannot receive cell phone or texts.

There are 2 types of 5G.

One uses frequencies that are really short range (100-200M) and can't penetrate very far. It will be similar to WIFI/Broadband.

The other uses current 4G mobile frequencies and travel the same distances (say 3KM)

5G is going to be like fintech in the US. It's more advanced in China but not even a public discussion in the US for multiple of reasons. For one the banks are in fear of it because the Chinese system doesn't have fees most of the time for using it. US banks don't want that known hence why there's no discussion especially since no banks are involved in China's system. All the other reasons are more superficial. They don't want to be seen as a follower and not a leader. They don't want China being given credit for being innovative. It's just like a lot of mobile app ideas are coming out of China and US internet app companies are getting ideas from them. There's going to be a lot of things going on using 5G in China and Americans will hardly ever hear about it. And what do you hear from the trade war all the time? The US invents everything and everyone else needs the US while the US needs no one. See how it can ruin that narrative.

Would'nt the faster transmission rate of the short range frequency compensate for any latency and how would you compensate for the inability to transmit through the walls?

No. Latency is the delay between signal transmissions and receiving. That is required for real-time applications. Throughput is just how much data can be carried.

Then what is there to suggest that the Verizon and AT&T system is a inferior to the Chinese one?

Reminds me of this article

Why China’s Payment Apps Give U.S. Bankers Nightmares

Wandering the streets of Shanghai to admire the architecture, the head of one of the largest U.S. consumer banks recently found himself surrounded by a gaggle of teenagers.

Entranced by their phones, they hardly made way for the banker. The teens were messaging, shopping and sending money back and forth, all without cash. Instead, they were using Alipay and WeChat.

The scary thing for the American: Banks never got a cut.

Go to YouTube and search cashless society. You'll see how it's being used in China beyond just money transfers. I suppose another barrier from Americans going for a cashless society is how one's information is transferred over the internet. One of those videos mentions how Chinese aren't really concerned how their personal information is travelling through the internet while in the US people are wary. One of the things the US uses to get people paranoid over China is their conceitedness that everyone one of them are important enough to be spied upon. I suppose that doesn't help in a cashless society.
