Russian Navy Sinks Flagship With Parade Mine

The flagship of Russia’s Baltic Fleet, the Neukrotimy patrol ship has been hit by a demonstration bomb and partially sunk in the Neva River in the center of St. Petersburg, the Kommersant daily reported on Monday. The incident happened just one day before Sunday’s Navy Day parade that was held in the city.

The Neukrotimy (“Indomitableâ€) arrived in St. Petersburg for celebrations to mark Russian Navy Day on July 26. On July 30, it suddenly submerged below its waterline, collecting water in its engine compartment, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Divers found a rupture in a weld joint and plastered it, after which the ship was moved to a dock for repairs, the agency said.

Kommersant, however, gave details of the incident which forced the flagship to be removed from the parade. The daily said that the sailors planned to make a show of destroying a dummy sea mine during Sunday’s parade. The dummy, which still had about 30 kilograms of TNT in it, was supposed to create a huge splash that would spray the spectators on the embankment. However, the current brought the bomb up to the ship’s hull together with the anchor and it exploded causing the Neukrotimy to partially submerge.

The Military Prosecutor’s Office has opened a criminal case under the article “careless handling of potentially dangerous itemsâ€. They said that the role and degree of responsibility of the military officials in charge of the preparation and conducting of training measures near the ship would be ascertained during the investigation

Ahahahahaha, that's just lame. they should've secured it better.

i think the russian navy equipment has no problem at all, it's just the officers and soldiers should be more careful. i mean incidents like this one can be totally avoided if they're more careful at planning. they should've taken the current into the account when planning such dangerous action.

as for the mini-sub incident, it's really weird how a fishing net got into non-fishing water. i think the russians intentionally put it there just to test how well it would stop a submarine...but i guess they forgot about that cable with anchor during the planning.

again, a carefulness issue with the russians.

This all due the lack of money. When there's no funds for maintanance and crew sallaryes, things like these happens. Russian naval equipment is good, when in good shape but all equipment are useless whitout well trained user...

If Russia would now face a naval struggle, it would'nt propaply perform well...but if and i strongly belive that when russia rise again....

Neukratimy is a gunboat not a flagship (wtf?). It didn't sink, just suffered minor damage and was already repaired. It was a mistake of some idiots, not a fault of equipment. By the way, russian navy was semiprofessional during soviet era.

when has the russian navy ever been professional.?

Under Peter the Great and during the late 1980's are some of the examples.

russia's navy is entirely cold war. no stealth, just overload on missles. they would get whooped in real combat, but the missles look to fearsome for someone to try.

This statement doesn't sound reasonable. The only way they could be whooped is due to inexperienced crews. Lots of missiles can't be possible reason, lol. No stealth? What do you mean? Technically russian fleet is up to date.

The current Russian Navy is a lot better than the PLAN. The best ship in the Chinese fleet is the Sovremenny and they only have like 4 ships of that class. The Chinese Navy consists of mostly outdated ships.
