I think the failure of HTC is not due to Samsung being strong, but it is due to HTC following the initial route Samsung took when they build android phone. You can see the HTC Hero received the best response in the market and the phone received updates, also HTC only kept promoting 3 main models. In Samsung's early phone like the Galaxy, it did not receive any updates at all and Samsung kept producing multiple models with no promise to update any of the model. This has somewhat changed. You can see after HTC success, they kept building more and more model and failed to pay any attention to any specific model in updating it. However, Samsung on the other hand started to promote the Galaxy S and later model and promise to update it as much as it can. This lead to its revival.
