Re: Indian Army & Navy news thread

I can't really imagine India spending that much for building and expanding in it carrier fleet while a lot of people are hungry, doesn't have access to sanitation, clean water, education and jobs.

By the way back on topic, I just wonder what would India do to such a large number of carriers? They still plan to keep their current carrier until 2019.. Buying another one from Russia, and planning to build their own carriers with estimated umber of 3...

The INS Viraat is on its last legs, and so are their Sea Harriers. Despite a refit, her boilers and hull are reaching 60 years old. They cannot overhaul the boilers forever, nor can they continuously sandblast the hull, without rust out occurring. "Rust-out" is caused by repeatedly sanding warships, which leads to hulls becoming progressively thinner and more fragile to the point where holes appear. It is like the question of how many times can you take a car to the autobody shop and smack on the Bondo?

Fine then... But it would still mean at some oint in time at around 2015 onwards India might have as much as 4 operational carriers or even 5 (depending on how much time will it take for the construction of their own planned 3 carriers...

What will be the use of such large number of carriers? Very excessive isn't it?

Well knowing about Indian shipbuilding, and it's lack of speed, its impossible to predict how long a ship will be built. They have start construction of their indigenous aircraft carrier which might be built in 5-7 years, they should get the Gorshkov at some point, maybe 2 years. When they get the Gorshkov they should retire the Viraat.

So in 9 years they could have 2 operational air craft carriers, and maybe another building. I have heard that after the first indigenous air craft carrier the next one might be 60000 tons.

With Carriers, now nuclear submarines...

Honestly, if you look at the Indian military growth, they are actually the ones who could spark an arms race in Asia...

Yet.. The most funniest part, it was a third world nation that is building such military force.

What puzzles me about India is how its trying to antagonize China while ignoring larger, more realistic threats from Pakistan and Maoist rebels. Its drawing away valuable resources and manpower to fight an very unlikely war. Perhaps the ruling regime is attempting to scapegoat the 'evil commie' China to draw the public away from its real problems of corruption, social unrest, class unequality and poverty.

India has a very large coastline, and they are on the path to becoming a world power.

Yet not one nation critisize India or have the "Indian Threat" running around in govt. offices and media....how strange....

Does it need such a large number of carriers to protect it?? Carriers are being used as power projection platform when launching far campaigns. It would be impractical to use carriers to defend your coastline.

Why not build more or larger airbases in the land? Which are less expensive and easily convertible for private usage (airlines) when it become unnecessary? Which as a matter of fact are more economical!!!

World power??? Does it make sense at all if poverty rate was high? Corruption is still widespread? A lot of people doesn't have water and access to clean sanitation? Doesn't have sufficient jobs? Inadequate infrastructure??

Meaningless, Meaningless!!! Everything is Meaningless!

Agreed!! While on the other hand, many are already criticizing China's military growth. Why?? That's definitely unfair to treat China like that, while India was allowed just to pass by.

Ah but you see, India is a DEMOCRACY. That means Western countries at least will just look pointedly away at India's military expansion.
