So in your opinion the UK and all other ex Commonwealth countries like NZ Australia and Canada where the Queen is the head of state are not democracies either.

In a simple answer. YES! Democracy means choosing a leader via the democratic process of voting.

These countries do not process that right as per Germany, France, etc. So they are not true democracy in the pure sense.

The fact, the queen does not interfere with elected prime minister is irrelevant. She still technically have that power. She just choose not to exercise it.

I don't think it got released anywhere because of Covid. It went straight onto Netflix, etc in most countries.

But surly, even if it didn't get released in NZ. You must have heard all the commotion around it? With actors and the West claiming all sorts

Cross my Heart I never heard or read a thing about Mulan after its completion.

That's ok. It is my thought to assume that everyone must have heard about the making of Mulan. Especially, with the commotion surrounding it about the lead actors all anti-Hong Kong traitors.

And also, upon dye release, Covid hit. And the western media trying to make political capital out of it. Etc.

If it wasn't for these, I probably won't have heard of it either.

Japan is a modern constitutional monarchy. In addition, Japan is a one-party state controlled by a small group of political royalty, factions, and powerful interest groups. Japan is a democratic country because the West says so. Same thing can be said about Singapore, nobody talks about the fact the island nation is a dictatorship. They coined the term benevolent dictatorship to describe Singapore. BTW, Hong Kong was doing exceptionally well when it is much more authoritarian. It is very naive to claim democracy means good and not democracy means bad.

Hmmm how would you describe Taiwan Thailand Malaysia Indonesia? Japan does have an opposition party in parliament and it wasn't that long ago when the LDP lost an election.

I would say Thailand and Malaysia definately have monarchy. Indonesia was a dictatorship. And it's best not to go there with the Republic of China.

Hmmm how would you describe Taiwan Thailand Malaysia Indonesia.

Taiwan used to be an authoritarian regime but at the moment it is a democratic government. However, Taiwan democracy preys on populism. Taiwan elections would always decide by politics not economic or social issues even though there are many grievances especially young Taiwanese over economic and social issues.

Thailand is ruled by military dictatorship. Even though Thailand officially is a constitutional monarchy but the military has always been the kingmaker. Elections are tolerated as long as they don't threaten the military rule. Thailand military fears populist government but couldn't address the disenfranchisement of a huge portion of its population. If Thailand didn't have a good relationship with both the West and China, then we probably would see a civil war already.

Malaysia is another constitutional monarchy. Malaysian politics is rooted in racial and religious agendas so much so that other issues become irrelevant. Both Chinese and Indians minority have been racially discriminated by the state. Young people felt disenfranchised but the state discouraged young people from participating in politics. In the end of the day, Malaysia is at the cross road here and need to find a path forward. Otherwise, we might see looming crisis soon.

Indonesia emerged from a dictatorship towards a democratic country. It has been trying hard to put the past behind them but the threat of religious extremism is real. The next leader of Indonesia could be elected by religious populism.

(Bloomberg) -- Next Digital Ltd. founder Jimmy Lai was denied bail after being charged with fraud, marking the outspoken pro-democracy media mogul’s latest run-in with the law as the city cracks down on high-profile dissidents.

Lai, 73, was kept in custody pending further proceedings, according to Mark Simon, an aide to the media tycoon. Two other Next Media executives who were charged alongside Lai were released on bail, Simon said. The case was adjourned until April 16, broadcaster Now TV reported.

Shares of Next Digital, which have been on a roller-coaster ride this year -- they’ve hit record lows and 12-year highs in 2020 -- were halted from trading in Hong Kong Thursday. They last traded at HK$0.23, down 10% for the year.

Lai’s arrest comes on the heels of another prominent activist, Joshua Wong, being sentenced for more than a year in jail for leading a protest outside of police headquarters last year. The moves represent the latest setbacks for the anti-Beijing movement that paralyzed the Asian financial hub last year. The turmoil prompted China to push through a national security law for the city, giving local authorities broad powers to silence critics.
