I must admit, I'm confused ... what kind of differences exist between the H-6KG vs H-6J?? At least I noticed none and therefore I'm not sure, if H-6GK and H-6J are in fact the same.

I think PLAAF upgraded their H-6K to add ECM pods, resulting in H-6KG. PLANAF always had ECM pods on their H-6Js.

H-6K — NO ECM pods
H-6KG and H-6J — ECM pods

There could be other changes or differences (SATCOMs etc.), but I have neither the eyesight nor expertise to comment.

Yes, but since he mentioned differences between the J and KG ... but I don't know any visible ones.

More likely H-6KG (even it's official designation to begin with) is just H-6K upgraded to H-6J standard.

Thank you Deino et al for the replies. Possible differentiators, or so I've been told, between the J and KG might be EO/IR turret color and AIFF antenna shape/placement. Would love to know if you concur.

Also, do you believe the H-6N is currently in production, beyond the 4 or so that have been built to my knowledge? Or is the focus just KGs / Js as far as we can tell?

Compared with H-6KG, H-6J typically has four longer pylon adapters closer to wing roots for YJ-12 missiles:



And two shorter ones closer to wingtips probably for YJ-83K missiles:



The older H-6G can carry two YJ-12 missiles, plus two YJ-83K missiles or ECM pods:

Does outer pylon lack the capability to carry heavier loads so they can only incorporate lighter missile like YJ-83K.
