H-6 Bomber Aircraft Discussions

Well that's something else entirely vs what you said about the first time clearly seeing YJ-12 carried by a PLANAF aircraft.
Duh. My friend, a wholly unneeded comment.

To get back on track with more relevant comments: I guess without knowing the weight of AKD-20 and weight of YJ-12 it's going to be hard deducing much. I do hope for PLANAF's sake that H-6K will be able to carry 6, as otherwise the whole decision to make the YJ-12 so large that JH-7 can't carry any wouldn't have been *as* worth it and *as* sensible.

I think it is rather needed actually, because having a clear photo showing a missile has been on an aircraft vs having a photo showing missile+aircraft to try to extrapolate dimensions are two very different things.

After all it's not like the topic of YJ-12s dimensions is one which hasn't been discussed to great length.

Probably more relevant going forwards is whether J-16/15 can carry YJ-12, but even then I'm not sure where the missile fits in the PLAN's overall AShM order of battle.
YJ-12 is in service with H-6 variants, as well as a limited few surface combatant classes (currently only 051B but perhaps soon the refitted Sovs). Meanwhile the rest of the main destroyers (055/52D) use YJ-18 and the 052Cs use YJ-62s and frigates and Corvettes use the lighter YJ-83s.

Seems to me there is a bit of a demarcation between heavier YJ-18/12/62 vs the much lighter YJ-83, the latter of which is obviously far more suitable for being carried by tactical strike aircraft in terms of weight class.

The problem is that a YJ-83 weight class missile probably isn't going to be able to achieve particularly serviceable range if you designed a supersonic missile around those weight parameters

Interesting, Huitong calls the YJ-12 equipped H-6 the H-6L. Image courtesy of ST via Huitong's CMA blog

@huitong just updated his blog with the first clear image of a PLA Naval Aviation H-6J, albeit this particular aircraft shows a completely strange, unique number '9125' ... so is just the first regular '8' missing which would fit to a 89125 or is it a new system?

After some closer inspections I have the feeling the number is not manipulated. ... so again something new or back to the old serial system of Independent Regiments?!

The H-6J bomber with the unit number was shot, and it was discussed that the H-6J had already been deployed to the Navy Air Corps

in one of the development of the> H-6K, is improved mainly focused on the anti-ship attack capability Information that 4 aircraft have already been handed over to the Naval Air Forces> Applied as an update to the existing H-6G (continued)

  1. The H-6J has a completely redesigned airframe design, is equipped with a D-30 KP2 engine that is stronger than the existing engine, increases the range of use of composite materials to make it lighter, and adopts the new avionics. Equipped with ASM and electronic warfare pod, it has greatly improved its overall ability

    > As an anti-ship attack aircraft, the operation radius is extended by 500% to 3,500 km, and the number of anti-ship missiles increased from 2 to 4 to 6 for the H-6G. The main armament of the H-6J is the long-range supersonic ASM YJ-12, which is an end-of-war weapon for a standoff attack against the US Navy's DDG.

Interesting difference between a H-6K and the H-6J: The H-6K (PLAAF) has its EO-turret placed in the middle/centre position, whereas the H-6J (PLAN NA) has its EO-turret placed slightly off-set.
