Future PLA combat aircraft composition

What would be the role of the VTOL, V/STOL or STOVL fighter aircraft in China's military? In other countries they are used from aircraft carriers that lack cats and are too small to use STOL fighters over ski ramps or that doesn't have cats or ski ramps for political reasons. Has China plans to build small flattops that would need to launch jet fighters that might be twice as expensive and half as powerful as the aircraft launched by Liaoning?

Chinese Ship makers have offered LHD's abroad, and those are widely used with VTOL fighters In the US and other navies around the world of course the technical challenge of VTOL fighters is large. It's the most complex type of fighter with the worst performance sacrifices. Frankly It might just be more cost effective to use Helios off LHD decks and if you need fighter strikes ad hoc a CV on to the Amphib task force.

Exactly. Especially while China is investing a huge effort in learning to use CV's and building more of them.

I put this excellent datas ! from Deino can be usefull for a udapte.
I once made a compilation / summary in late 2013 of all the info I gathered around and here's the updated version; quite interesting, the first three production blocks were only of 24 aircraft each.

J-10 + J-10A
J-10-Batch 01: 24
J-10-Batch 02: 24
J-10-Batch 03: 24
J-10A-Batch 04: 40
J-10A-Batch 05: 40
J-10A-Batch 06: 40
J-10A-Batch 07: 40

J-10S + AS

J-10S-Batch 01: 10 (??)
J-10AS-Batch 02: 40
J-10AS-Batch 03: 40

J-10B + C
J-10B-Batch 01: 55
J-10B/C-Batch 02: in production, so far 27 spotted (with 32 reported !)

Overall I think it is save to assume that with now for the serials A and AS (7 batches of A + 3 batches of S/AS) + the B/C-production at 55 J-10B and 27 J-10C I come to a sum of:

232 J-10A
90 J-10AS
55 J-10B
27 J-10C
-------------
404 serial J-10 of all versions (without the prototypes)

I have no idea whether they're talking about regiments, brigades or divisions with their ordinals. I checked scramble and in many cases, their ordinals are applicable to both divisions and regiments.

Translation:

2015:
124th gets J-10A
2nd and 21st gets J-10B
19th and ?FTTC? gets J-10C

2016:
14th, 7th and 6th gets J-11B
126th gets JH-7A
Various flight academies get the "7B/H" (J-7 variants?) from the aforementioned units

The comments note that the units getting the J-10B are the 2nd and 3rd, and the 21st is actually getting the old J-10As from the 3rd.

I think the 124th refers to the 124th Brigade, since there isn't a 124th Division.

The 2nd, 3rd and 21st probably refer to divisions although there are 2nd, 3rd and 21st Regiments. The replying comment reinforces this since it mentions J-10As being passed from the 3rd and scramble does not note any J-10As in 3rd Regiment, only in 3rd Division.

The 19th probably refers to the 19th Division since the 19th Regiment operates Flankers and it's unlikely they'll switch to J-10Cs from Flankers. If the Su-27SKs in the 19th Reg needed replacing, they'd have likely gone with J-11Bs, which leads to the next point.

14th and 7th are probably referring to divisions. The 14th Reg is unconfirmed on scramble and is ostensibly an attack regiment operating Q-5s, so fat chance they're getting J-11Bs. 7th is a bit of a toss-up but under the 7th Division is a 19th Regiment mentioned in the previous paragraph that operates Su-27SKs that are nearing the end of their service lives. Hence, it's logical for them to get J-11B replacements. Comparatively, the 7th Regiment is a J-7 unit and I was under the impression J-7 units usually get J-10 replacements.

6th is unclear but given that most of the preceding ordinals likely refer to divisions, I'm leaning towards 6th Division as opposed to 6th Regiment. 6th Div 16th Reg operates J-11s, likewise with 6th Reg which also operates Su-27s.

126th probably refers to the 126th Brigade since 126th Reg and Div doesn't exist. Also, if the 126th is getting JH-7As, it should be close to the coast to be able to deliver its anti-ship ordnance and what do you know, the 126th Brigade's Liuzhou base in Guangxi is quite close to the coast.

The "7B/H" refers to J-7s, I think. The 126th operates J-7IIs according to scramble so if they're passing any planes onto flight academies, it would be J-7s.
