On a clear spring day in Washington, televisions, radios and the Internet explode with shocking news -- assassination attempts on world leaders have taken place from Paris to Athens. In the span of only a few hours, high-level Western politicians, corporate executives and military personnel are kidnapped or simply disappear. Throughout the U.S., Europe and the Middle East, bomb blasts in major cities and random acts of violence by armed gangs are reported. Unexplained illnesses in schools, businesses and public transportation centers leave thousands of people literally “falling down” sick.
Severe atmospheric disturbances, similar to periodic solar flares or electrical storms, shake the U.S. heartland – crippling the nation’s electrical grid and causing mass panic in American cities. Wall Street, U.S. government agencies and domestic military installations lose their ability to effectively communicate with the outside world and each other. Unconfirmed reports point to an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) missile launched from northern Mexico as the cause – although Cuba has also been mentioned as a possible source. Cyber-attacks originating in Eastern Europe and Asia assault the remaining vestiges of the worldwide Internet.
Attack satellites of unknown origin destroy or disable key components of the Western Global Positioning System (GPS) used by the U.S. and its allies to coordinate and track global military movements. The U.S. responds, but their technological advantage has been significantly diminished. Almost instantaneously, U.S. commanders are left “blind” on the battlefield making them susceptible to attack.
The U.S. is essentially “disconnected” for the first time.
Frantic Western leaders begin to ask questions – What country or group could be behind the attacks? What is their ultimate objective? How should the West respond?
From the East, there is an eerie silence. Russia and China have failed to release information concerning their own experiences over the past several hours. Given the complexity and scope of the global operation and the intelligence needed to conduct such attacks, some Western national security experts suggest Islamic terrorists are acting with the support of a powerful country. They conclude that a well-coordinated global terrorist attack is underway designed to destabilize or destroy Western governments. Early signs point to Iran, a known supporter of terrorism and an enemy of the West, as the country behind the attacks.
However, a small group of intelligence experts believe the West could be witnessing the early stages of a much more serious global assault – a large, multi-pronged conventional attack by a China-Russia-Iran triad. Moreover, the group asserts that the anti-West triad has been planning a coordinated assault for some time, waiting patiently for the precise moment when the U.S. and its allies have been paralyzed by economic malaise, military dissention, political corruption and cultural conflicts.
Almost completely blind and increasingly confused, Washington learns that a nuclear-capable Iran has crossed into southern Iraq on a surprise offensive aimed at securing Saudi Arabia’s vast oil fields and fracturing the weak U.S.-led coalition. Commercial shipping and military vessels in the Strait of Hormuz come under missile attack from Iran with several oil tankers set ablaze.
Unknown to the U.S. and its allies, the advancing Iranian army is secretly comprised of several Chinese infantry and armored divisions ferried to Iran over a period of 24 months through Pakistan. Moving rapidly, the massive invasion force overwhelms British troops stationed in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, immediately threatening smaller oil-rich states such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen and Qatar. A second Iran-China army attacks Iraq from northern Iran penetrating the country and driving south toward Baghdad. A third Chinese army pierces Afghanistan to engage the U.S. force stationed there. There is little doubt now that the very existence of the U.S. as a world power is at stake.

A lack of heavy armored units and reserves due to the Iraq War and other global commitments confound U.S. battlefield commanders and inhibit their ability to respond. A limited nuclear strike against North Korea is proposed by Washington but strongly rejected by Seoul, due to the absolute destruction it would cause on the peninsula. Air power, while initially effective against the North Koreans, becomes less potent, as U.S. and South Korean pilots experience exhaustion from the sheer number of sorties required. Dogfights with what appear to be warplanes with Chinese markings claim a number of senior U.S. pilots and their planes. Smart ordinance and long-range cruise missiles, staples of earlier conflicts, are quickly depleted by U.S. forces resurrecting memories for U.S. commanders of shortages during the Second Persian Gulf War.
China then makes its first unilateral military move. Taiwan is attacked with hundreds of missiles aimed at destroying the island’s military, communications and transportation infrastructure. A Chinese naval blockade using a combination of submarines and surface ships commences. Four U.S. carrier battle groups steam toward the area. The U.S. force is met by several Chinese Kilo-submarines and the country’s older, but numerically formidable, diesel submarine fleet. Land-based, ship and Sukhoi fighter-bomber launched Sunburn missiles inflict severe damage on the arriving U.S. fleet from several miles away. The ensuing battle results in the loss of several U.S. frigates and two carriers. With thousands of American lives lost and valuable, high-tech material loses also multiplying; the U.S. finds itself unable to adequately support the defense of South Korea and Japan. Airstrips located on the island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean are targeted by Chinese submarine launched missiles effectively grounding part of the U.S. long-range B-52 bomber fleet.
With dreams of resurrecting the Soviet empire and a chance to regain a foothold in energy-rich Central Asia and North Africa, Russia moves south into Armenia and Azerbaijan accompanied by several divisions of Chinese infantry and armored units. Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan willingly join the fight against the U.S. and its allies. Russian paratroopers are seen outside Kirkuk, Iraq and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Realizing the overwhelming nature of the assault and the shifting geopolitical scene before them, Georgia, Chechnya and the Ukraine agree to join the developing anti-West alliance.
World financial markets collapse and Western investors panic as Beijing, Moscow and Tehran confiscate all foreign assets located in their respective countries. All three countries believe they are well prepared for the post-Western world having incrementally withdrawn large sums of money from Western institutions, sold investments and closed government and business operations prior to the attack. Shocked American and EU consumers face empty store shelves and gas tanks. Russia halts all oil and gas shipments to Europe, the U.S. and Japan.
As several large battles rage throughout the Middle East, representatives from Moscow, Tehran and Beijing boldly announce to the world that the U.S. century has ended and that a new “Asian century” has arrived. Moscow and Tehran proclaim their allegiance to Beijing. Out of the resulting financial chaos, China sees an opportunity for a new “Asian Wall Street” more powerful than the Western version, based upon socialist ideals, economic conformity and military might. Rising social unrest in Russia and China leading up to the invasion turns into fiery nationalism, as the leaders of both countries proclaim the restoration of past glory and pride and the creation of a great coalition. Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and one-time ally Australia agree to participate in the financial arrangement, as smaller countries in Africa and Asia slowly announce they too will follow the dictates of Beijing.
Polarized by its energy dependence on Russia and still stigmatized from its involvement in WW II, EU leaders arrive in Beijing for negotiations aimed at creating a “peaceful economic partnership” with the new China-led triad. At the same time, Europe’s several million Arabs are mobilized, led by a group of well-organized, radical clerics. Violent unrest and civil disobedience becomes widespread. European cities are set ablaze and leaders flee into the countryside. EU governments, frightened by the prospect of a continent-wide civil war and the destruction of their economic union, make broad concessions, agreeing to withdraw their militaries from the Middle East and promising not to take economic or military action in the future.
Uprisings in southern Lebanon, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in support of a “final conflict” against Israel commence. Recognizing the possibility of an all out attack by neighboring Arab countries, Israel makes public its intention to use a pre-emptive nuclear strike to defend itself from invaders. Tel Aviv declares martial law and warns Egypt, Jordon, Syria and Turkey against offensive military action. Instead, Arab leaders wait for a winner to surface in the U.S. – China-Russia-Iran duel believing collective action can be taken against Israel after victory has been achieved by the triad.
African nations such as Algeria, Morocco, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Nigeria, weak from sickness, decades of government corruption, extreme drought and fragile economies, decide unanimously to back the China-Russia-Iran triad, viewing their support as a means to gain the triad’s favor and protection. Under attack from radical Islamic groups and Al Qaeda elements who view the government as Western sympathizers, Pakistan erupts into civil war. New Delhi watches the developments to its West and North closely and warns both Pakistan and China of a military move.
Under attack from all sides by a numerically superior and comparably equipped force, Washington is faced with a decision that will affect the world for generations. Should it regroup its Middle East forces to defend Israel; engage the invading force using purely conventional means; launch several independent nuclear strikes forever destroying the region’s energy resources and killing millions of innocent civilians; or accept the new world order?
