Colonel
Those cranes do go along during deployments.

They have numerous uses while at sea.

If there is a malfunction or breakdown on the flight deck that require heavy lifting on the flight deck, that cannot be moved to the hanger at the time...the crane comes in very handy.

Or, if there is an accident and heavy wreckage needs to be moved.

The US Navy also has similar vehicles on its nuclear carriers.

that is correct.. they are call tilly cranes or crash/salvage cranes used mainly for salvage purposes in the event of disabled aircraft and they need to move it out of the way ASAP! Their secondary role is of course they lift heavy things on the flt deck if needed.
You don't go out to sea unless you have one on board. They are that important!

Tiger, Puma, Gazelle and Caracal aboard Tonnerre

As part of its growing power, projection and command vessel (BPC) Tonnerre finds its function of assault helicopter carrier, during an intense campaign landings. From 30 November to 4 December 2015, the campaign takes place for the benefit of the pilots of the 3rd Regiment of Combat Helicopters (3rd RHC) of Etain and the 4th Regiment of Special Forces Helicopters (4th RHFS) of Pau but also in favor of aviation teams the edge, fully mobilized.

"These aboard exercises allow us to perform delicate posed. The maritime atmosphere provides less marks for drivers, especially at night where they may be subject to delusions, "explained the 4th RHFS detachment commander. "We must be able to project operational drivers throughout the year," says a captain of the 4th RHFS.Day and night, the sailors on board and drivers are working together to enable pilots to qualify on utility helicopters Puma and type of assault, reconnaissance and attack Gazelle, attack type Tiger and Caracal special forces.

Touch and go (TAG), ship control approach (SCA), since air traffic control provided by the CCAT (tactical controller) to dialogue between pilots and cabin aircraft in the circuit, it is a well established organization which to launch the project. Given the specific aerospace, vigilance and risk control are recalled every moment: a successful training is a safe driving leads.

Like any naval platform, the BPC has its constraints, including risks related to coactivités and aviation safety that are particularly sensitive on a platform implementation with six spots. The professionalism of the bridge team ( yellow dogs ,PONEV and SECU ) Tonnerre also means tradition of hospitality on board: good mutual knowledge, sharing and openness are part of the conditions to meet for the full success of the mission.

This week operational readiness is to enhance interoperability of forces, and to familiarize the drivers with the marine environment. For the 4th RHFS Detachment Commander objectives are achieved at 100%. "
