fragile egoes; India protests for missing flag in farmville game

In early October 2009, there was controversy regarding the lack of the Indian flag as an available decoration on FarmVille; among several other national flags offered, the tricolour flag of India was missing. This was first publicized in The Times of India and later spread to other media sources.[9] Some considered this absence an "insult" to the country,[2] and campaigns were launched in order to bring attention to the issue. By October 9, over 20,000 users added their name to a petition asking Zynga to add the flag.[2] This also caused other players to request that their national flags be added to the application.[2] On the following day, Zynga released a Twitter message which stated: "We celebrate the diversity of all of our players around the world. We're working on all sorts of flags to help you represent your pride."[9] On October 13, the Indian, the Philippine, and Portuguese flags were added to the game.

facebook, have you use it before?

farmville is popular online socializing and networking game, planting crops and raising farm animals. My wife is playing it alot.

Indians think it's an Insult to its people without its flag available in the game.

if they could react like that to online game, so needless to say about geopolitics....I wouldn't even want to go there. lol

I heard FarmVille has caused some troublesome in Taiwan, e.g. employees spend too much time playing it and it causes internet to slow down. My wife is one of the FarmVille fan too, and she gets frustrated every time she fails to access the network and all the crops and animal die!

I think the Indian has over reacted. They should have started negotiate with the company through civil society. The company has no reason to refuse adding the flag, because that brings them more users. That gives me a feeling of using a missile to shoot down a mosquito.

Indians are people with strong national pride, just as the Chinese are proud of their culture and past historical achievement.

The desire for international recognition of their achievement is very strong. They have world class software technology, rocket science and Asia's only aircraft carriers beside Thailand.

This desire is so strong that some of their advance technology projects are, in my opinion, were aimed at international recognition, and may not benefit the country's people other than boosting their moral. Example is their Lunar satellite and discover of water on Moon.

Their clear message is "Do Not Ignore Us." Indian is fast becoming a major world player following the Chinese foot steps.

Not to turn this political or anything, but India is nowhere near a major world player, and probably will never be. Clamoring for a flag on a facebook game, no matter how many signatures you garner, won't change that.

When was the last time India was an instrumental influence on global politics?

There is a fine line between feeling proud and feeling insecure/lack of confidence about oneself. On a personal level, if someone starts to make a big fuss about something insignificant, like why his name is listed after so-and-so, we would say this guy is insecure about himself and has a confidence problem. If 20,000 people in one nation decide to make a big fuss about something so insignificant like an on-line game, it tells me that there are a whole lot of insecure people in that nation, which suggests that the whole nation is insecure about itself.

And talking about desire for recognition, if one is confident about himself, he needs no recognition from anyone. He would be the one who give recognition to others.

Talking about Farmville, my wife is playing a Chinese equivalent of the same game. I think it's with QQ. Some of her friends are in China and of course because of the time difference, they would begin playing when we get to sleep. She would get up in the middle of the night to harvest so that her crop/eggs/baby animals would not be stolen by her friends :nono::nono::nono:

One day, I found her visibly upset about something. I asked what's bothering her, she said one of her friends stole all of her valuable crop in the middle of night and left her with nothing. And she vowed that she would stop being friend with this gal since she could tell that this girl is not a moral person...
