at what point in: would Mission Data Files come into play?
Logically I would think so. In their flight ingress, the tasking orders would determine their way points but likely subject to re-routing as the threat picture gets updated.

The USAF needs to do a better job in selling the idea of the F-15X. It is just not believable when they insist that the new buys of F-15X would not affect the F-35 procurement. Sure it will because when you have a limited budget, there will be sacrifices. The F-35 program is already 5 years behind schedule and hundreds of airframe behind original timeline. LM says it has present capacity to manufacture 160 units a year and Lot 11 this year is only doing 141 units. If they have the funds, clearly they will buy more if not for funding being the limiter.

Having said that. the USAF do have an airframe shortage problem due to the truncation of the F-22 program. PCA is still a long way away and the existing F-15C/D's are old with the youngest being 32 years. It badly needs life extension and avionics upgrade to remain relevant. The aging issue leads to maintenance problem and spare parts. The proper conversation should be about options until PCA comes on stream. The options are replace the duties of the existing F-15C/D's with the F-16 fleet. After pushback from Congress, I think this idea is dropped for the time being. The next option is to buy more F-35s to do the job but I don't think this seems to have much traction. Personally I think this is a bad idea because the operating cost of the F-35 at $45,000 per hour is problematic and the main challenge currently for the F-35 program in terms of sustainment. If they don't get this down, it might truncate the program just like the F-22.

The current proposal with the F-15X has a number of benefits. Firstly Boeing has indicated a price lower than the F-35 which could mean below $80 million a unit. This comes with all the upgrades and a 20,000 hours service life. The missile loadout is said to be 22 and would be an excellent missile truck partner with the F-22/F-35. The biggest benefit is Boeing has run their numbers and confident that the operating cost on the F-15X will be $27,000 per hour versus $42,000 per hour currently with the F-15C/D. This means the F-15X will be basically self funded. Boeing's claims need to be validated but I think the F-15X option is attractive given the respective options.

F15CX and F15EX are unlikely in my view to be the supposed "Missile Truck". They are targeted for ANG squadrons at best assuming that the buy doesn't bite into PCA. (Something I almost guarantee it will. ) PCA is supposed to replace the Active duty F15s.
Even as a missile truck the drag on these birds is ridiculous.

Yesterday at 9:34 PM I meant to ask into what "Tier", if any, should Mission Data Files go, in the context of your description
The sensor fusion architecture of the F-35 is based on centrally fusing the data. This means that after the respective sensors e.g. EOTS, EODAS, AN/APG-81 and AN/ASQ 239 have vacuumed the raw data, they are not processed at the sensor nodes but instead channeled to the fusion engine (core processor). The threat picture and tracking data are build based on the fusion of all available raw data. The fusion process is driven by a set of algorithms and the reason for the millions of line of codes. The outcome of the battlespace picture is the tier 1 data. If certain sensor data is corrupted by noise from electronic counter measures, the idea of fusing all raw data derived from source helps to isolate bad data from individual sensor. In a sensor formation of typically four F-35’s, each will derive its own tier 1 battlespace presentation. When the tier 1 data is then shared within the formation, this is when the tier 3 battlespace picture is made available. Once at tier 3 layer, all the F-35’s will share a common operating picture (COP) of the battlespace and if there are any link back to C2, the same COP will be available.

CSBA Analyst Calls For F-35C Redesign

A U.S. defense expert says the U.S. Navy should redesign the

to perform a future role as a fleet defense fighter and long-range bomber escort.

The recommendation by Center for Strategic and Budgetary Analysis (CSBA) analyst Bryan Clark is included in a newly-published report that urges the Navy to rethink the current composition of the carrier air wing.

As a stealthy aircraft packed with targeting systems and weapons, the F-35C is designed to perform ground attack and air-to-air missions. But its 670 nm maximum combat radius falls short of the range the Navy needs for a future role in the Pacific theater, Clark argues.

In a theoretical conventional war with China, CSBA’s analysis concluded that aircraft carriers must operate 1,000 nm east of the rising Asian power’s coastline. The ground attack mission would have to be taken over by a future unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) instead of the F-35C, Clark says.

At the same time, the Navy will also need a more capable frontline fleet defense fighter, he adds. The F-35C and the

/F were designed to perform a multirole mission. Clark argues that the carrier air wing needs an aircraft optimized to perform as an air-to-air fighter. The so-called F/A-XX could perform long-distance fleet defense missions and escort Air Force bombers if Chinese missiles disable the runways on land bases for

.

Instead of designing the F/A-XX from a clean-sheet, Clark suggests that Lockheed could redesign the F-35C to perform that role. It would require integrating a more efficient propulsion system and conformal fuel tanks, he says. The funding would come from truncating the Navy’s planned F-35C order after half the aircraft are delivered, he says, but the development phase should begin now.

“That would allow the Navy to get the more specialized aircraft it needs for a higher threat environment we’re facing in the future,” Clark says.

Because Boeing doesn't Lobby?
F35 was procured by all three services of there own accord.
but, to my surprise, the LockMart lobbying unable to stuff the USAF with the F-35A
The only way this gets through is if Boeing promised the sweetest deal of the decade. That the cost of life extension for the Legecy eagles ended up chocking a price of almost as much as a new bird as is and Boeing offered the X at bargain basement Clearance sale prices

that's why I said the LockMart lobbying got a problem, since
...
  • in the USAF top brass, there's just one group:
    F-35 stealth F-35 stealth F-35 stealth F-35 stealth F-35 stealth F-35 stealth F-35 stealth F-35 stealth
and who doesn't like it, goes

this group is looking for every billion to be poured into F-35s, in the process of course trying to kill A-10s, not upgrading Raptors much etc.

time will tell the rest

Well Jura I am starting to suspect that there was more going on that just Lobbying.
2007 November The Longeron crash.
We are quoted as high as 30 million a bird to fix it
2014 The 65th Aggressor squadron that flys F15 is closed having opened in 05.
2017 march we hear about the USAF considering way retirement of F15.
November we are told, 1 million a bird for the Longeron. But 30 million for extending the life to 2040.
2018 We hear that Lockheed Martin and Boeing are approached to ask about new birds to take F15C/D fighters.
November F15X.

My suspicion, the Longeron figure jumped back to 30million and when they added in other upgrades someone said for that much we could buy new.

since I've now looked at them, I post
