re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

my favorite F-35 shot
That's a nice shot.

I am partial to these two:

Also really looking forward to actual qualification shots aboard carrier. A cat shot off a carrier at sea, trap shot, parked, etc.

Funny how that F-16 is trailing behind the F-35 during refueling when it's carrying extra fuel tanks under its wings.

My guess is that that F-16 was a chase plane for the tests the F-35 was doing, one of which was refueling, and they wanted to make sure it had plenty of fuel and would not need to refuel itself causing the F-35 to hold up its tests waiting for the F-16.

I see, but the refueling plane is right there though. If it needs refueling the F-16 could just wait after the F-35 is done refueling.

Yes, but then the F-35 would have to wait and hold up its testing while the F-16 was refueling. My guess is that they did not want to do that and so the F-16 carried extra fuel tanks...but that's just a guess on my part.

Jeff, I read that the production of the F-35 is having problems. What's your reading? If true true, it only shows it's not easy to develop a high-tech aircraft by any country for that matter.

it shows that it's not wise to trust companies based only on their power point proposals :p

the problem with F-35 is incorporating too many roles into one design mold, and expect it to still come cheap and outperform

That makes sense. Thanks.

I don't think it's incorporating the body frame into three different roles for the aircraft that are costly, but the two type of engines that incorporate it for all three variants of it. Some state representative don't want to cut the second engine program, due to their constituate concern for job security for the companies that made those.

My feeling is that the F-35, all three variants, will get produced. The troubles now, particularly with the current congress and admin, are slowing and delayiong production...but I predict that even if late, once it gets into production there will be many orders for it...and for all three variants.

Many Navies will end up wanting the F-35B for its STOVL capabilities and the LHA, LHD, and Sea Control Carriers that are proliferating.

Other navies, like the UK, perhaps Brazil, the US (of course) and maybe Inida eventually will want it for their CATOBAR carriers. And I believe numerous air forces around the world will ultimately buy it.

All of this will bring down costs eventually because of the numbers being produced.

Time will tell. Right now there are 30 of them already built and they will build 35+ each year for the next two years and then begin building hundreds.
