Do keep in mind that the F-35 is capable of a lot more roles than the F-22, which is dedicated air superiority. Having a lower mission capability rate is pretty much expected. There is also the complication with maintaining a fifth generation fighter aircraft you don’t see in earlier generations.

To dismiss the F-35 would be the Chinese equivalent of Jai Hind. It is easily the greatest aerial threat until B-21 enters service.

Not at all dismissing it. Just hoping the trend lines continue.

No way we can dismiss the capabilities when it can fly.

But that plane still carry the problems of a project mean to do all with a lot of promised and untested technologies.

Adding to that it's build from parts manufactured by the less demanding subcontractors from all over the place for a plane that have been constructed in numbers way before all was ready and problems sorted out.

Even now, a lot is not sorted out...

The F-15E is multirole yet outperforms both the F-22 and F-35 in reliability. The problem is clearly something other than its intended role.

I think the F-35 is at the bleeding edge of technology. There's only so much t/w you can extract out of an engine and its performance comes at the cost of reliability.

Of course doesn't mean the F-35 should be overlooked. The Americans can solve this single issue by increasing their inventory. It still is the only 5th gen platform that is available on the international market (with lots of strings attached).

They will fix F-35 engines for harmonic vibrations problems:

''The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) has issued a directive recommending that all Pratt & Whitney F135s powering the global fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35s be retrofitted within 90 days with a fix for a vibration problem that caused an aircraft to crash on Dec 15.''

It doesn't look like a huge retrofit but it prove that having only one engine option is not always a cost saving initiative.
