Well Jura's sinario wanted the F35B to make a strike at a target 800km in hostile territory. The FA18E has a CR of about 722km. Of course the Rafael makes a claim of a CR of 1600km... Which seems far more dubious.

There are so many variables when it comes to range, internal load versus external load, drop tanks vs clean, high altitude (lower fuel consumption) vs having to go in on the deck (much higher fuel consumption), but more particularly speed, (can you go in subsonic) and stealthy, or are you gonna have to push the levers up into burner, because whoever knows you are coming and are ready and waiting???

F-35s are going to have a higher fuel consumption by virtue of their size and output, that's why its of capital importance that the newer more fuel efficient engines be designed/built/tested/and incorporated into any serious combat aircraft!

and stealth is and will continue to be a game changer, or should I use L/O, any time your signature can be reduced, it should be, but that too, is expensive and time consuming......

Neither of those 4th Gen birds are gonna want to go down-town against S-400s, but even the F-35B will be able to take on that role,, it's always nice to tank up, but if stealth is an issue, you're better off carrying aux tanks and dropping them prior to the "run in" to the target, as tankers will open the door to your "access point"..

So tactically, it depends on who the target is, and what their AA capabilities are.

the question is if Kirkuk, Iraq

(in an imaginary scenario, possibly catastrophic like ISIL rising again, but that's obviously not my point here; I picked Kirkuk because of its geographical location)

would be within their combat radius from either sea:

the distance is roughly (don't nitpick) 800 km, and the combat radius depends on the mission, right?
so: what I actually meant was if the RN, using an F-35B off the QE class, would be able to drop a bomb on Kirkuk, Iraq

The F-35 Joint Program Office say they have completed all F-35 weapons separation and weapons delivery accuracy testing as part of the System Development and Demonstration phase.

“Completion of these weapons tests represent a critical step for the entire F-35 team as we demonstrate the game-changing performance of the F-35,” said Jeff Babione, Lockheed Martin Executive Vice President and General Manager for the F-35 programme.

“The joint government-industry team overcame challenges and showcased outstanding collaboration throughout weapons testing, and the results have given our customer great confidence in the F-35’s weapons capability.”

Since 2012, the F-35 Integrated Test Force has successfully completed 183 separation tests to verify each weapon’s ability to be released and launched from the F-35, both internally and externally, across the range of the aircraft’s operational speed, maneuverability and altitude. An F-35C conducted the final test in November with a successful AIM-9X separation say the company.

According to Lockheed, the team completed 46 weapons delivery accuracy tests to verify that all weapons launched from the F-35 aircraft can effectively strike intended targets with required precision.

“An F-35A completed the final WDA on Nov. 30, 2017, with internal gun testing.

The 183 weapons separation tests comprised air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, to include the AIM-9X, AIM-120, AIM-132, GBU-12, JDAM, JSOW, SDB-I and the Paveway IV.

The Weapons Delivery Accuracy tests comprised the same weapon set, as well as the internal gun and gun pod.”
