received an approximately $373 million modification to the previous F-35 low-rate initial production contract to cover deficiencies for non-US operators. The contract modification, awarded by the US Navy, does not specify the deficiencies, and says work is expected to be finished by March 2020. The modification comes after Lockheed was awarded $7.2 billion for the LRIP Lot 10 in November, an award that covered 90 aircraft

A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II aircraft with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 refuels using a KC-130J Hercules with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 during aviation delivered ground refueling training at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, April 11, 2017. The ADGR marked the first evolution of this form of refueling for VMFA-121’s F-35B Lightning II aircraft, and it increases the squadron’s ability to refuel by C-130 aircraft in austere locations when other resources may not be available.
U.S. Marines with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR) 152 conducted aviation delivered ground refueling with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121 at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, April 11, 2017.

The ADGR marked the first evolution of this form of refueling for VMFA-121’s F-35B Lightning II aircraft.

The purpose of the training was to establish flow rates of fuel in gallons per minute distributed to the F-35B Lightning II aircraft by KC-130J Hercules, to see how fast the process would be if used in a real-world scenario.

“It felt great to be a part of today’s refueling, it was surreal,” said U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Keon Willingham, a powerline mechanic with VMFA-121. “Being able to participate in the first ADGR with the F-35 is something I can look back on and be eager to tell stories about.”

Successfully completing the aviation delivered ground refueling is a landmark that increases the capabilities of the squadron, offering the ability to refuel by C-130 aircraft in austere locations when other resources aren’t available.

Despite reaching a milestone in aviation, the training offered more than memories.

“I’m going to take away how multi-face this operation was,” said U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Matthew Schoon, ordnance technician with VMFA-121. “We had to deal with different components from the pilot in a running F-35, to a running KC-130 and Marines from VMGR 152. There was a lot of communication, and I had to keep my head on a swivel the whole time. That’s something I’ll be able to apply in any situation.”

The Marines with both squadrons faced issues with the climate but didn’t let it stop them from accomplishing their tasks.

“The weather played a big factor in the training today with safety, visibility and communication,” said Schoon. “Training with the engines on the aircraft still running made it very hard to hear so we had to use hand signals. The rain made visibility with eye protection on difficult, so we had to ensure we were being thorough and making safety a priority.”

VMFA-121 used the ADGR on the air station as a stepping stone to prepare for real-time refueling in remote locations.

“Completing this training is a huge confidence boost for us,” said Willingham. “Being the first to successfully complete this training and being able to do so safely, gives everyone involved the state of mind that they can accomplish anything. We will continue to train, and we will improve anywhere we can.”

US Air Force F-35s making first operational deployment to Europe this weekend
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

The U.S. Air Force’s F-35A is deploying internationally for the first time this weekend, heading to Europe to conduct training exercises with NATO allies, the Pentagon announced Friday.

The Defense Department offered sparse details about the event, which will involve deploying a “small number” of F-35As from the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, to an undisclosed location in Europe.

The joint strike fighters will take off sometime this weekend. After landing, they will then spend several weeks in the region as part of the European Reassurance Initiative, the department’s effort to strengthen military ties with European allies to help deter Russian aggression on the continent.

“This training deployment signifies an important milestone and natural progression of the F-35 program, allowing the Air Force to further demonstrate the operational capabilities of the fifth generation fighter aircraft,” the Defense Department said in a news release. “It also assists in refining requirements for eventually basing the F-35A in Europe, which is scheduled to receive the aircraft in the early 2020s.”

As tempting as it may be to link the deployment to U.S. President Donald Trump or his currently shaky relationship with Russia, an F-35 deployment to Europe has been in the works since the Obama administration. In December, former Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James hinted that the service would go to Europe this summer.

“Now that the F-35 has been declared combat capable, we will deploy our newest fighter to Europe in the not too distant future,” she said then during a speech at the Atlantic Council. “Matter of fact, if I were a betting woman, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if the F-35 didn’t make an appearance, perhaps, next summer. The unique combination of stealth, situational and sensor fusion will play an important role in reassuring allies and providing deterrence.”

In February, former Air Combat Command head Gen. Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle, who retired last month, restated that the service could send the aircraft to Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions as early as spring, with a deployment to the Middle East probably following a couple years later.

Although the Air Force won’t say where the F-35s will be based during their European deployment, one potential option is British Royal Air Force base Lakenheath, England, which is slated to be the first Air Force base overseas to receive the joint strike fighter. RAF Lakenheath will eventually host 54 F-35As, although the timeline for deploying those aircraft has slipped from 2020 to perhaps one or two years later, Col. Robert Novotny, then the commander of the base’s 48th Fighter Wing, told Defense News last year.

to Europe in the aircraft’s first training deployment to the continent, officials said.

A “small number” of the Lockheed Martin Corp.-made fifth-generation stealth fighters will fly overseas for several weeks beginning this weekend, according to a release Friday from the Defense Department.

The move is part of the Pentagon’s larger push to deter Russian military aggression in the region.

“This is something leaders have planned and suggested for a number of months,” Capt. Mark Graff told Military.com.

Last year, the Air Force deployed the

, a twin-engine stealth fighter, for military exercises. Indeed, given the previous deployment of a stealth fighter to Europe, Graff described the forthcoming F-35 deployment to the continent as “routine.”

The F-35s are scheduled to fly with other U.S. and NATO aircraft for “long-planned training,” according to a Defense Department release.

in Utah — the only base with operational F-35As.

The Air Force didn’t disclose the number of aircraft involved, but said it would be small and that the mission is part of the so-called European Reassurance Initiative to support allies in the region following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and support for pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine.

officials plan to release more information — such as where the aircraft will fly training exercises — in the next few weeks, Graff said. The drills will assist “in refining requirements for eventually basing the F-35A in Europe, which is scheduled to receive the aircraft in the early 2020s,” according to the release.

The move comes days after the U.S. exercised its military might in various missions across the globe.

Officials also plan an F-35 theater security package rotation, or TSP, to the Asia-Pacific region soon. Such a rotation includes forward-deployed aircraft and units that conduct missions across the continent over six months to reassure allies.

Maj. Gen. Jerry D. Harris Jr., the service’s deputy chief of staff for strategic plans, programs and requirements, testified before the House Armed Services subcommittee on tactical air and land forces in February, saying the Air Force is prepared to send an operational squadron this calendar year “to include a Theater Security Package Deployment to Pacific Command.”

USAF F-35A deploys to Europe

A small squadron of the US Air Force’s F-35As will fly to Europe this weekend for training with NATO allies, marking the F-35A’s first international deployment.

As part of a long-planned effort within the European Reassurance Initiative, the squadron will train for several weeks with other US and NATO aircraft in Europe, the US Defense Department says in a 14 April statement. The USAF plans to release more information about the training effort once the aircraft arrive in Europe, according to the statement.

“This training deployment signifies an important milestone and natural progression of the F-35 program, allowing the Air Force to further demonstrate the operational capabilities of the fifth generation fighter aircraft,” the DOD states. “It also assists in refining requirements for eventually basing the F-35A in Europe, which is scheduled to receive the aircraft in the early 2020s.”

The training marks the first international deployment for the USAF’s F-35A variant, but not the first overseas operation for the Joint Strike Fighter programme. In January, the US Marine Corps’ F-35B fighters flew to the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 in Iwakuni, Japan.

The European deployment does not likely signal new sabre rattling toward Russia from the Trump administration. For months, air force officials have hinted at a European deployment. In December, then-USAF Secretary Deborah Lee James indicated the F-35 would fly to Europe later this year. As early as the F-35A’s initial operational capability announcement in August, then chief of Air Combat Command Gen Herbert Carlisle told reporters he would like to deploy the F-35A in both the European and Pacific theater within 18 months. Carlisle also mentioned deploying the aircraft to the Middle East if needed.

“There's a couple of things, some of our partners or allies are interested in seeing the airplane operate,” Carlisle said. “Many of our partners and allies are interested in interoperability. So I think when the F-35 deploys to European and pacific theater, it will give our allies and partners confidence in the airframe.”

Carlisle also noted that sending the F-35 to Europe did not indicate provocation toward Russia, but rather reassurance for NATO allies.

“From my perspective I think it sends a good signal,” he said. “When you send F-22s to the European theater last fall and obviously there’s great messaging, great capabilities that go along with that and I think sending F-35s...reassures friends and allies and it is a deterrent to potential adversaries.”

aircraft this weekend on a long-planned training deployment to Europe.

Here’s the statement of the Department of Defense:

“The aircraft are scheduled to conduct training with other U.S. and NATO aircraft based in Europe for several weeks as part of the European Reassurance Initiative.

This training deployment signifies an important milestone and natural progression of the F-35 program, allowing the Air Force to further demonstrate the operational capabilities of the fifth generation fighter aircraft. It also assists in refining requirements for eventually basing the F-35A in Europe, which is scheduled to receive the aircraft in the early 2020s. Once the aircraft arrive in Europe, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. European Command will release additional information as it becomes available about the F-35A’s training deployment.”

Where the aircraft are going to be based has not been unveiled yet. Whereas some sources believe it will be RAF Lakenheath, UK, others suggest it will be Spangdahlem, Germany.

The one about to start in the weekend will be the JSF’s first European deployment and the first overseas deployment for the U.S. Air Force F-35A. On Jan. 9, 2017, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 (VMFA-121), an

United States Air Force F-35s arrived in the United Kingdom today, marking the types first deployment to Europe.

The F-35As are from Hill Air Force Base, Utah and will conduct air training over the next several weeks with other Europe-based aircraft in support of the ‘European Reassurance Initiative’.

US Air Forces in Europe, Air Forces Africa commander said:

“This is an incredible opportunity for USAFE Airmen and our NATO allies to host this first overseas training deployment of the F-35A aircraft.

As we and our joint F-35 partners bring this aircraft into our inventories, it’s important that we train together to integrate into a seamless team capable of defending the sovereignty of allied nations.

RAF Lakenheath will be the first overseas beddown location for the F-35A, this deployment allows our pilots and maintainers to learn more about the European operating environment and will improve our interoperability with partners in the region.”

As part of the training deployment, the aircraft will forward deploy to NATO nations to “maximize training opportunities, build partnerships with allied air forces and gain a broad familiarity of Europe’s diverse operating conditions.”

The transatlantic flight for the training deployment was supported by the US Air Mobility Command and the 100th Air Refueling Wing from RAF Mildenhall.

Multiple aircraft from four different bases offloaded more than 400,000 pounds of fuel during the “tanker bridge” from the United States to Europe.

Additionally, C-17 and C-5 aircraft moved airlift support, moving maintenance equipment and personnel.
