“It’s a dance, it’s a little bit of a dance,” he said, adding that negotiations are just beginning. “But we’re going to get the costs down and we’re going to get it done beautifully.”

Like I said He's playing a game. He know's he can't cancel F35 and that even if Boeing offered up a Hyper Hornet it would not be in the same class so he's playing a game. He wants to look like he is reigning in programs even before he is in office.
The Advanced F/A-18 is the closest...and it is not close enough.

Open up a YF-23 line! do it! OF course, that's not Boeing, he'd need to talk to Northrop-Gruman..

I'll bite, lets do it! love to see the YF-23 revived and rolled into production! updated as a 5.5 gen, all the great shaping, supercruise, and only the best F-35 innovations, on a crazy fast, very L/O platform. '

Let the Japanese partner with us to bring it to fruition!

Long time... but some says YF-23 except for agility better than F-22 a bit more stealth, range for weapons load more difficult coz pics with show AIM-120A and after for F-22 can have 6 LR AAMs internaly the AIM-120C was built initialy F-22 can host only 4 AIM-120A with wings more large of 8 cm 53 vs 45 cm same lentgh, same diameter.

Can be interesting but for conversations better going on

Given the timeline on that, might as well speed up the 6th generation fighter instead.
would never work.
Let's take a second and hypothetically lay out realistically layout what would happen. So the Air force calls Northrop Grumman and asks them to referb the YF23 to demonstrate the mission and come up with a bomber version. Before the call has ended Lockheed and Boeing have filed protests with the GAO. The GAO rules that the DOD cannot pass and must either open a competitive contract or no go. So they open a contract Lockheed puts forward either a modified F35 and or the X44 Boeing jumps in with some concept maybe even BAE jumps in. So say a month for the GAO 4 to build the demonstraters then 6 months of trials, another month for final bids. Another month for final decision. Then 6 for tooling up to build the winner and start LRIP for years as the low rate birds and program go through the same trail by fire F35 is in so maybe by 2025 they are combat rated.

With this President, and judicious use of art of the deal in the buildup he is planning...I bet he could come up with a deal that would make them all happy.

The F-35 is here to stay...it will not be canceled...but he may be able to get the prices lower faster.

A new YF-23 built as a strike fighter bird could work.

Boeing can going to get plenty of work off of what is coming.

If he works the deal right, keeps them all happy with new orders and growth...then perhaps protests do not get filed in the first place.

It just takes some one who can work with them and get the wheels and gears greased.

One I have learned never dismiss anything I remember the B1 was supposed to be approved by Carter but instead got cancelled it was not until Reagan did we see the Bone in its current form so I think we shall have to wait and see on this one too I say just about even money we see a different price on the F35 before long though that is almost certain and seeing as we reading and talking about the F18 only here I wonder if its strictly the C model that is in question
