related: "Bogdan acknowledged it was a risk to fly the F-35Bs that had not yet received the bracket retrofit, but said it was one of many risks that come with operating the aircraft.

“Military airplanes all have risk,” he said. “This plane is like no other and yes, there are acknowledged risks, and that would be one of them. Until we fix that bracket, every airplane of the B-model that doesn’t have that bracket is going to have to be inspected, and hopefully that bracket remains in place when it’s flying.”

now read the FlighGlobal story Loose bracket caused F-35B fire
A fire aboard a US Marine Corps F-35B was caused by a loose bracket designed to hold together electrical wires in the aircraft’s weapons bay, F-35 programme executive officer Lt Gen Chris Bogdan says.

The loose bracket allowed electrical wires to move and chafe, stripping the insulation around the wires. Those electrical wires sparked near hydraulic lines, igniting a fire in the right side weapons bay, Bogdan says.

The pilot landing safely without injuries according to the USMC. Meanwhile, the programme office had already identified the potential loose bracket issue and had started a process to retrofit the F-35B variant jets with a redesigned part.

The aircraft involved in the fire did not have the redesigned bracket but had passed an inspection. However, the bracket still dislodged, Bogdan says. Since then, the JPO has completed another inspection on the aircraft.

Bogdan also defended the USMC’s decision to continue flying the aircraft that day even though the service knew about the loose bracket.

“Flying military airplanes all have risk and this airplane is like no other,” he says. “Yes there are acknowledged risks.”

The fire on the one F-35B comes down to logistics (how fast can they get the fix tat they already knew about implemented) and maintenance, how often are those brackets that have not been replaced being checked and tightened down.

In this case, the failure was in one of those two areas, perhaps both...but most likely in the second. If you know it has a tendency to get loose...you check it after every flight and make sure it is tight before it goes out on the line.

It may be as stupid as some group, or officer, or decision to try and safe a few bucks by not checking it as often.

I wonder how many of those stupid brackets could be built, or how many could be tightened for what it is going to cost to fix this one aircraft.

Probably every single bracket left to be replaced and many, many more is my guess.

Someone is making a big issue out of nothing. The aircraft in question simply has not been retro-fitted with the proper bracket.
History of the F35, Every Time the pilot has tripped over his own bootlaces it's brought outcry from the critics. can you imagine the hell in a handbasket if a female pilot broke a nail or a maintainer forgot to perfectly polish the canopy. Calls for a Congressional hearing if a pilot dropped his sandwich in flight. Everest over an Ant hill.

I'm guessing your line hasn't been in use when Boeing, Lockheed CEOs Meet with Trump Over F-35, Air Force One
