So simulators are the next best thing, and they are very effective teaching tools, and as real as they are, they do lack in some of the finer elements of the flying experience????

here's one (video from October of last year):

Finally, a well written piece that seems to grasp the role of the F-35 and its superior adaptability to many different and forward thinking roles, thanks for posting Jura!

I guessed you'd like it, AFB :) in the discussion below that article, somebody even suggested to create a mixed Typhoon/F-35 RAF Squadron(s) ...

Can someone please answer this...this bloke (used to work for Dassault) has been constantly saying that F-35 is not 5th generation aircraft and Rafale is more advanced and its also stealth jet etc. As i am not an military expert, i can't answer it thoroughly and in details.

Is the F-35 a 5th generation fighter?

From my point of view no and I explain:
5th generation is a marketing tool for L.M. so it means nothing, but even if you look at the L.M. definition of 5th Generation F-35 is not compliant!

The L.M. definition is the following:

The definition including :
  • "advanced stealth",
  • "extreme performance",
  • "

    " and
  • "advanced sustainment".

"advanced stealth"? perhaps; "

"? Yes but it still doesn't work; "advanced sustainment"? it definitly doesn't work; "extreme performance" ? No
F-35 is not able to super cruise and looking at its poor performance how somebody can say it is "extreme performance"

I think conceptually it is the way to go to leverage its capabilities but at a practical level I think there will be significant integration issues and hurdles viz a viz European systems. For example, the F-22 can't talk to the F-35 via IFTL and the F-35 can't talk to anybody else via its MADL. The common link is via Link 16 but that is not LPI but even that for the F-22 it is not even 2 way and requires a BACN intermediary. Having said that, with time these issues will eventually be addressed.

Well, number one he is a past Dassault employee, so he might have???? some bias???? So in fact I do agree that the F-35 is Not the F-22,,,, it will NOT supercruise, it is NOT supermaneuverable, and it will NOT fly at the extreme altitude of the F-22, so I would agree that given those parameters that initially defined fifth gen, it is a light weight,,,, It is very stealthy compared to its near peers, it will have superior situational awareness and sensor fusion, particularly with other F-35s operating in concert with it, the Helmet is an amazing tool that makes you as close to one with your aircraft as you are likely to achieve..

It is a very powerful aircraft, but is also heavy, like the F-22 it is very aerodynamically active, it has been flown to 73 degrees AOA, although it is limited to 50 degrees in normal operations, twice that of most fourth gens, the A model, the A2A bird of the three, has been flown to 9.9Gs positive, so it is very strong as well. Flown WVR the Raphael may well have an element of parity, and possibly even a few advantages, but the Raphael is not a stealthy fifth gen, and "active cancellation is a "claim", with very little to substantiate that claim, and certainly no hard data??????

BVR the F-35 is very superior to anyones fourth or four point five gen aircraft, General Hostage has proclaimed it stealthier than the F-22, surprising, but this aircrafts capabilities will continue to be enhanced, as it achieves different milestones on its way to IOC. As of tonight there is only one operator of the Raphael, that tells you that confidence in the F-35 is very high, and the people who are spending the money have a great deal more confidence in the F-35 than the competition, LockMart has built a winner, the partners are buying an aircraft with the same capabilities as the USAF, NAVY, and MARINES, and they will be able to operate seamlessly with other F-35 operators, and that is a big deal!
