The KC-767A Italian first international refueling aircraft certified to supply the Joint Strike Fighter

(defensa.com) The office of the Joint Strike Fighter program has published data certification tests conducted in the United States using a Boeing refueling aircraft KC-767A of the Italian Aeronautica Militare for supplying fuel to an American F-35A.

The tests took place between July 29 and August 6 at the airbase of the US Air Force at Edwards, California and have involved making 25 contacts with refueling probe (boom) in which the F-35A 16,000 pounds has received fuel.

These tests have been used to certify the aircraft refueling Italian for such missions in the plane of Lockheed Martin, with the first aircraft to get out of the US Air Force. The plane employee belongs to 8th Squadron 14th Wing based at Pratica di Mare near Rome. Italy has four refueling aircraft KC-767A which have pole or refueling boom that allows you to refuel the aircraft and other US Air Force, but also has three baskets for the system hose and drogue refueling of other aircraft used by . The fact that all three versions of the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, two have receptacles in the fuselage to use the pole (F-35A and F-35C) and the version of short takeoff and vertical landing F-35B is given by employing US Marines example uses the hose and drogue system (hose and drogue).

Italy is one of the international partners of the Joint Strike Fighter program, having agreed to acquire 90 aircraft of which 30 will be F-35B to deploy in the Italian Navy, which operate mainly from the Cavour, once you adapt to employ this airplane.

Croatia's air force has received all its long-delayed refurbished Mikoyan MiG-21bis-D fighters and UMD-model trainers from the Ukrainian Ukrspecexport organisation.

The delivery of seven overhauled aircraft plus five additional single-seat examples under the €13.9 million ($19.3 million) contract enables the country to field one fully operational fighter squadron, and will bridge the gap until a new type is acquired.

Croatian sources blame the delays on issues with integrating the new navigation and communication equipment from Czech supplier CLS, as well as challenges caused by digital-to-analogue signal conversion.

says it will claim “penalties specified in the contract” for the late delivery.

The final aircraft - serial number 134 - was received after final flight tests were carried out by the air force on 16 July, and the squadron was lined up and officially unveiled in full strength in the presence of Croatia’s top military officials.

Romania’s Aerostar previously conducted an overhaul and limited upgrade to eight MiG-21bis fighters for Croatia, and added four enhanced UMD-model two-seat trainers in 2003.

The Croatian state defence council, chaired by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, announced in April that Zagreb was to maintain a combat fixed-wing fleet, which restarted a programme to replace the fighter force.

The defence ministry confirms that it has sent requests for information to several companies and embassies as a first step in the acquisition of the new combat type.

The spanish navy is investing into R&D to develop the newest class of surface combatant, the F110 class FFG.
The focus of this R&D seems to be the sensors of the integrated single mast, as well as the combat system.
Those 5 new FFGs will replace the OHP-based F80 in spanish service. Though they seem to have less of an ASW focus as is probably the case on a Perry class vessel.

MADRID — The Spanish government has given the green light to its new generation of frigates after authorizing a first R&D contract of €135.3 million (US $150.3 million) to develop the F-110 series from 2015 until 2020.

"The purpose of this R&D contract is the implementation of three programs: develop the integration of sensors on the mast, the incorporation of new capabilities in the Scomba combat system and actuation and control of missile systems to be installed in future frigates F -110," official sources reported.

It is expected F-110 frigates will replace the six Santa María-class frigates (F-80) of the Spanish Navy from 2022 until 2030. Military sources reported the plan is to build five new frigates. This will be the major Spanish Navy military program in the next decade together with the construction of the S-80 class submarine.

"The main novelty of F-110 will consist on the integrated mast, where the communications system, radar, electronic warfare and optronics will be located. All in one, avoiding rotating elements," explained the same military source.

Missions at Sea

This new F-110 frigates will operate in high-threat scenarios forming battle groups at sea or may act alone in areas near the coast.

Anti-aircraft, asymmetric warfare, maritime safety, naval power projection, military-civilian cooperation, deployment flexibility, hybrid propulsion and space for unmanned vehicles are features and missions that will be carried out by the Spanish Navy with these new frigates.

It will have a 24-cell Mk 41 vertical launch system for Standard or Sea Sparrow missiles and a 5-inch/62 caliber Mark 45 gun.

This new generation of Spanish frigates will be equipped with the Scomba combat system, developed by Navantia after the technology transfer agreements with Lockheed Martin during the former Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates (F-100) program.

The Spanish Navy also has five F-100 frigates equipped with the Lockheed Martin-developed Aegis combat system.

Built by Navantia

The F-110 frigates will be built by state-owned Navantia. Other Spanish companies like the defense systems producer Indra will also be involved in the project. This contract is seen as vital for the future Spanish shipbuilder, according to defense industry sources.

After some military exports with the Australia, Norway and Venezuela navies in the past decade, Navantia is now building two BAM ("Buque de Acción Marítima") offshore patrol vessels and the first S-80-class submarine for Spanish Navy.

Navantia is also on a contract short list for the Australian Ministry of Defense to build two auxiliary oil and replenishment ships.

The Spanish government boosts this new military program five months before the general elections and after eight years of economic crisis. The F-110 program has the support of the two major political parties (PP and PSOE).

The F-110 program is also considered as the core for Spanish military exports in the future. "This type of frigate could be appropriate to replace about 65 frigates or corvettes in internacional military markets in the decade of 2025-2035," said an official Spanish government source. "And of course, potential clients of Navantia will want a proven product by the Spanish Navy."

Belgium's Latest OPV Pollux P902 Escorted and Monitored Russia Navy Submarine in EEZ
db1rzMp.jpg

The Belgian Navy announced that the latest addition to its fleet, Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Pollux (P902) escorted and monitored a Russian Navy submarine and a Silva class tug boat while they were transiting in Belgium's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). According to the Belgian Navy, this was the first operational military mission for the new OPV.
...
Navy Recognition understands the submarine in question is Russia's new Project 636 (Varshavyanka) diesel-electric submarine (SSK) "B-261 Novorossiysk".
...
The Pollux OPV had taken over the ship of the Royal Netherlands Navy Zr Ms Johan de Witt LPD, who had followed the Russian submarine as it passed through their waters. After transiting in Belgian waters, Royal Navy OPV (River class) HMS Tyne took over and accompanied the Russian submarine into the English Channel.

I hope France deploys a Leygues class ASW Frigate next... because this sub is the latest generation and an evolution based on Kilo, it is headed in a tension zone (Black Sea) and I think it would be nice for NATO to have accoustic signature of this latest SSK... (And it is not by deploying LPD or small OPV that you obtain such thing)

What are these OPV's specs/characteristics.

I would be shocked if they had any sonar. So they must have tracked the SSK as it sailed on the surface.

As far as I understand, these OPVs are very minimally armed, with like a single .50 cal machine gun.

Nice sea state handling...but simply not equipped for real naval duties IMHO.
