Trade War with China
:

Beijing is criticizing the US indictments on two Chinese nationals accused of cyber espionage. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has called the allegations fabricated and baseless, saying Washington has violated the basic norms of international relations. The Ministry said China has been consistent and clear in defending cyber security, and urged the US and its allies to stop slandering China. The two Chinese are NOT in custody at the moment, but they have been put on a wanted list of American law enforcement. CGTN's Owen Fairclough reports.

Amid a trade war between the U.S. and China, a fresh complication for their relationship.

GEOFFREY BERMAN US ATTORNEY FOR SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK "Today, we announce charges against two Chinese hackers, Zhu Hua and Zhang Shilong."

Without offering specific evidence, justice officials say the pair belong to a Chinese government-backed group called APT10 connected to China's main intelligence agency. The group allegedly spent at least 12 years hacking computer networks from Brazil to the United Kingdom and targeted 45 U.S. companies, all aim at stealing trade secrets and personal information to give China a technological edge.

GEOFFREY BERMAN US ATTORNEY FOR SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK "Members of APT10 stole confidential personal information, including social security numbers and dates of birth for over 100,000 Navy personnel."

This indictment has been made at a sensitive time for U.S. - China relations - as the two are trying to resolve a trade war triggered partly by Washington's complaints that China steals trade secrets. And the Department of Justice had to fend off suggestions that the Trump administration is using this case to pressure China into favourable terms.

ROD ROSENSTEIN US DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL "We have a responsibility to investigate cases based on the facts and we need to apply the law and make independent decisions about what steps to take. Our decisions about whether or not a case merits prosecution are not affected by any other political considerations."

Even so, technology is a flashpoint in Washington's relationship with Beijing. The U.S. is trying to extradite the Chief Finance Officer of Chinese telecom giant Huawei Meng Wanzhou to face charges it violated Iran sanctions. The company has been banned from the U.S. over claims it threatens national security.

OWEN FAIRCLOUGH WASHINGTON "Justice officials here say more than 90 percent of economic espionage cases over the past seven years involve China and that this indictment violates a 2015 bilateral agreement with the U.S. to stop cyber hacking. China's government has repeatedly denied any involvement. OFA, CGTN, Washington."

Air China employee in US pleads guilty to working as agent for Beijing, ‘doing military’s bidding’

A Queens woman who worked for Air China at John F. Kennedy Airport pleaded guilty Wednesday to acting on behalf of the Chinese government by placing unscreened packages on a flight from New York to Beijing.

Ying Lin, who also goes by Randi or Randy, was working at the direction of Chinese military personnel stationed at China’s permanent mission to the United Nations, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

Lin, a naturalised US citizen, worked for Air China from 2002 through fall 2015 at JFK and then at Newark Liberty International Airport through April 2016. She could face 10 years’ imprisonment when sentenced.

“This case is a stark example of the Chinese government using the employees of Chinese companies doing business here to

“Covertly doing the Chinese military’s bidding

is a crime, and Lin and the Chinese military took advantage of a commercial enterprise to evade legitimate US government oversight.”

It is not known what was in the packages sent to Beijing.

In exchange for her help, the Chinese government provided her tax-exempt purchases of discounted liquor and electronics available only to diplomats, according to court documents, as well as free contracting work at her residence.

“Ms. Lin was secreting packages through some of the country’s busiest airports, using her work with the Chinese government to thwart our security measures,” said William Sweeney, assistant director-in-charge of the FBI’s New York field office. “We believe this case isn’t unique and hope it serves as an example that the Chinese and other foreign governments cannot break our laws with impunity.”

Nice 'n classical case of anti anything propaganda, and extremely subjective interpretation of data.

Article 27 of Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations makes it possible for any country to send package ( with unlimited size) from diplomatic mission to any other official location belong to a given country.

The USA use this facility to transport 1000 of tons of goods in every month between diplomatic locations from Baghdad to Helsinki.
Probably few package contain humans as well, who knows? Anyway, the usage of the facility by this way is against the convention, that doesn't supposed to allow the USA to run international smuggling with the article 27 .

So, for official goods transport there is no need to cheat with screening and so on, if a Chinese diplomat stamp the package then the airport officials has no right to check the content of it by any means,or to restrict the transport of it, or to stop the courier of the package .
It means that the case was simple commercial smuggling, without any Chinese official approval, and it has no business with the Chinese government.

They paid her with liquor and electronics? And they didn't even give them to her; they allowed her to shop for them at cheaper prices! LOLOL It was probably a personal favor to bring some Coach bags or Chanel perfume into China while avoiding customs taxes. If anything, China should prosecute her, not the US.

Yeah it also sounds like this to me rather than some big conspiracy. I mean diplomats have ways to pass packages and you could always use a private aircraft on a secondary airport to carry a package. Seems just like ordinary smuggling being made by someone there as a side business.
