CX-1 Cruise Missile

I am skeptical about the ram jet igniting the scam jet since you are blowing in exhaust gas into the combustion chamber filling it with inert gas acting like an extinguisher. If the scram jet doesn't ignite there will be no "ram jet ceases to function" stage.

ramjet/scramjet hybrid is standard design.

Now I realize that the missile tested in 2012 is hypersonic, it reached a speed greater than Mach 5 and an altitude greater than 20,000 meters. So it makes CX-1 looking like a byproduct of China's research on air-breathing hypersonic missile. If that is the case, then CX-1 is just a side show, and therefore it is probably for export only.

I don't think CX-1 is hypersonic, maybe towards high end of supersonic. I believe China is capable of weaponize a hypersonic scramjet or ramjet/scramjet combined platform, but maybe cx-1 is a 'dumbed down' verson with only ramjet capabilities. And I don't think they have utilited to the limit this particular platform, it is clearly for export because the range is capped at 280km in accordance of the treaty which limits export weapon range to 300km. For all that matters they might as well set it at 299km :D

The CX-1 is another example of a weapon that China, for some reasons is unable to purchase from abroad, is able to finally produce its own. Their jet engines may be lagging, but given time, will eventually see mass production also.

This configuration is obviously different from the CX-1 diagram in which the former shares the combustion chamber where as the CX-1 has two connecting combustion chambers in which the ram jet exhaust gas blows into the rear scram jet chamber.

I think the gas generator is the combustion chamber for the ramjet. Possibly that under ramjet efficient speed range the ramjet combustion provides thrust, while outside of that little thrust is produced, but serves to light the scramjet section, basically serves like a afterburner section directly with supersonic incoming gas.

China is not lagging in jet engine tech at all. In HIGH PERFORMANCE turbo fan engine ... yes .. lagging than the US, British and French and somewhat Russian. I am sure you know the diferences between turbo jet and turbo fan

I had in mind the deployment of domestic engines on J-10s and Y-20s, a few hours before the good news broke on the engine thread.

Nope since if you inspect the diagram closely you'll find that there is only one fuel injector at the ram intake side, basically the gas chamber is a large carburetor.

The main challenge of fuel combustion is optimizing air/fuel mixture. Creating that air/fuel mixture within the supersonic airflow of a SCRAM jet from the start is a very high technical hurdle so this system creates a fuel rich mixture in the gas chamber and then release it in the supersonic air flow for combustion. This system also solves a big problem with the afterburner model since afterburners requires a large amount of fuel as mentioned by various sources. Probably the main reason why there are no long range missiles that have an afterburner feature.
