CV-18 Fujian/003 CATOBAR carrier thread

If CV/N-18 and 19 are about the size of the Kitty Hawk (~83kt full), they should be able to carry 65-70 aircraft (including helos) routinely, or about what the Nimitz CVNs carry nowadays. That would allow something like 48 J-15s, 4 EW J-15s, 4 AEW/C turboprops, and maybe a dozen helos.

Also, counting the total number of aircraft on all of PLAN's carriers is not really a worthwhile endeavor. If you had 4 carriers, over the long term, only one would be active, one would be surgeable on short notice, one more would be surgeable with much greater preparation/time, and one would be completely out of action in dry dock. By way of an example, the USN's 11 carrier force only allow for 3 of them to be active at any given time. Its current force of 10 has fleet commanders complaining about deployment shortfalls in which all 3 are not available at all times.
Yep 48 J-15s Kitty Hawk have same CAW than Nimitz ( Midway 1 VFA in less and no F-14 )and it is clear actually Nimitz have a enough small CAW... 1 VFA, S-3, tankers in less so 24 aircrafts !
UCLASS replaced by UAV tanger a flight how many at less 5 surely..

Yup, it corroborates fzgfzy's statements from early this month. Here's the relevant post from this thread.

However, fzgfzy's source of information seems to be within the shipbuilding industry, and pop3 is a former PLAN officer with prior knowledge and existing connections, whereas I don't know from where 辽宁号指挥长 (Liaoning Commanding Officer) gets his information. Still, he is an admin at CJDBY and correctly predicted the April 26 launch so he's more reliable than an average netizen.

Additionally, here's a translation of that rumour:
  • Work on 002 officially begun, ceremony yet to be held.
  • Smaller than Kitty Hawk, larger than 001A.
  • Even number of steam catapults. No idea if he's talking about 2 or 4. Probably 2 if the 002 is smaller than Kitty Hawk.

Thanks again ... any more info on this "Work on 002 officially begun, ceremony yet to be held"?

I mean if You compare with 001A with first steel-cutting on 28. August 2013, lay-down on 10. March 2015 and launch today on 26. April 2017, it would be interesting to know what's meant when "Work on 002 officially begun" = first steel was cut and when "ceremony yet to be held" = lay-down ??

WAIT WAIT! Major screw up here! Had a brain fart and read 单数 as 双数.

He meant ODD number of catapults, not even number. So definitely 3 catapults.

According to fzgfzy, actual work on 002 began at the end of 2016. So, if a ceremony is to be held soon with PLAN leadership attending, I guess it would be to commemorate the beginning of module fabrication.

CD (short for CJDBY) confirms with the same post: Type 002 has started construction, larger than 001A, smaller than Kitty Hawk, will feature odd number of catapults (definitely 3).

Looking forward to the next carrier saga now that 001A's in the water. We won't see much visible progress on her now, with only fitting-out to do.

OedoSoldier added,
Don't know how reliable is this
1. Three steam catapult installed
2. The drainage volume is about 1.4 times that of Liaoning (more than 80000 tons full) 3. Length is more than Liaoning, but lessthan Kitty Hawk Width is longer than Kitty Hawk 7 to 8 m
3. Deployment of 36 aircraft 4. Construction started in Shanghai this year

Which shipyard is building 002? JNCX ?

I would like to think that DL and JNCX each build 002

That's 2 x CATOBAR
