I have the same question as well. Why didn't they use cat#1 & #3 to launch planes?

Because they're still in the initial aviation trials and verification stage and keeping as many external factors "constant" as possible is probably desirable (other factors like aircraft, weather, carrier speed, headwind etc will change).

Muhahahaha now I know what you guys sound like. :p

I can now voice dub the posts by you guys when I read them :p
yeah, I hope I didn't interrupt Rick too much in there, but my goal is to get him to talk more on the subject since there was a period I was gone during the CV-18 construction and also in the in service and getting up to IOC/FOC stage for CV-16/17.

We probably could've spent more time on CV-18 even, but I wanted to just get his thoughts on other programs we've seen also.

Just a rather ominous thought: This recent , ongoing ,ever -more -serious diplomatic spat with Japan has some Japanese(semi-official?) talking about sinking the Fujian as a priority target-now Japan has IIRC-12 Soryu class SSK's and they are /can be quite formidable especially if the sub tries to sink Fujian ,not caring about her survival-kamikaze type strike-has the PLAN factored this type of action as Japan has NEVER declared war first and then initiated hostilities but rather struck in a surprise attack without any warning or declaration(1895 1st Sino-Japanese War,1904/1905 Russo-Japanese War,Pearl Harbour, Second Sino-Japanese War-many times etc)Surely the Chinese gov't,PLA War Colleges know this and has increased alert status in all theater commands.BTW in line with Japanese /American thinking : a single huge,non-nuclear? decapitation strike on Beijing's Zhongnanhai to destroy China's seat of gov't by multiple stealthy cruise missiles etc given to the Japanese by USA for "defensive purposes"-these are tumultuous and uncertain times with Chinese power reaching another level of ascendancy by the day-this could be the westoids/japoids only chance to stop China's upward trajectory and hopefully(in their minds) induce a catastrophic chaos in China akin to the 1920's/1930's with nationwide chaos and even Taipei trying to seize the seat of power in Beijing-far-fetched I know but......

Likewise I believe this would be the perfect (and justified) opportunity for a repeat of what happens AFTER pearl harbour.. total annihilation of the japanese empire, this will not stop until the japanese armed forces are in complete ruins.

The Japan that pulled off those sneak attacks is a very different country than it is today. It gains nothing from going to war against China in the first place, and initiating a conflict would be even worse for them. Everyone in the JSDF knows that it's a terrible idea and Takaichi doesn't have the guts to override them on this matter.

Also, the idea of launching an attack to sink Fujian is just ludicrous. It may have been commissioned, but it doesn't have an air wing yet, and it's probably years away from being combat ready. Attacking it may have some symbolic value, but it has no effect militarily. It's the kind of idea that schoolkids would come up with.
