foolsball: After leaving the Western Pacific, the Shandong seems to be in no hurry to return to Base and appears to be continuing its training in the north of the SCS. Only the Type 901 supply ship can be seen in today's photo from Yulin base.

Note the heavy PLAAF activity SW of Taiwan yesterday, which may or may not be related to Shandong's activities.

According to CCTV, in May 2022, while on a far-sea mission, the Liaoning aircraft carrier was caught between two foreign aircraft carriers. In response to the serious provocation by foreign forces, J-15 fighter jets took off armed with missiles and tightly pursued the foreign aircraft, engaging in a dogfight from an altitude of 8,000 meters down to 2,000 meters, ultimately driving the foreign aircraft away. A J-15 pilot stated, "In confronting the enemy, not an inch of land or sea shall be yielded!"

It was announced that CV-17 Shandong will be visiting Hong Kong from 3 to 7 July so this is not surprising.
Military fans in mainland China were very angry and questioned why the Navy had opened its aircraft carriers to visitors in Hong Kong twice in a row, while the mainland had not even opened the Type 075 to military fans.

In a way I can understand them. Hong Kong doesn't deserve this honour after the stunt they pulled back in 2019. Why does the PLAN host these events for an island of mentally colonised anglo wannabes instead of doing it at Qingdao/Shanghai or any other mainland city is beyond me.

These are public relations events that foster national pride through the military. For China, that is more valuable in Hong Kong than it would be in the mainland.

There's a lot more support in Hong Kong for China than you might think. I've seen quite a few military themed videos on Youtube in Cantonese where the phase "us" is used when referring to the PLA. While I can't tell for sure whether these creators are Hong Kongers, that seems to be the most likely possibility. And it makes sense as military enthusiasts tend to like cool toys and China is coming out with the coolest toys right now.

In retrospect, the 2019 protests were a bit of a godsend for Chinese sovereignty in Hong Kong. In the years since the protests, a lot of young Hong Kongers have immigrated to other countries. These young people were overwhelmingly and vocally anti-China so the overall sentiment in Hong Kong should be a lot more accomodating now.
