Crazy ideas thread

It wouldn't serve the same role as a surface carrier.

For example, against a traditional CVBG, you could sent a few of these submarine carriers that would then launch its drones to search and destroy the CVBG. Or maybe just track it for AShBM targeting. Meanwhile, the sub-carrier itself would be safely out of detection range. Depending on the cost of those drones, the sub-carrier might not even need to stick around to retrieve them.

The point of a submarine is that 1) it is stealthy because it can't be detected by long range radar and 2) also invulnerable to surface attack weapons. So it can sneak up much closer to a target undetected. But 1) submarines cost a lot more to build and 2) are unable to communicate with other assets.

If you're sneaking around close to a target, that implies there are enemy airborne assets closeby. Retrieving airborne drones on the surface is a bad idea, even assuming that your drones make it back in the face of enemy fighters and SAMs. And given the low cost of drones/cruise missiles (such as the $3 million Valkyrie or $1 million Tomahawk) and an ADCAP torpedo even costs more. So there's no point in retrieving airborne drones with a submarine on the surface.

Make it launch bigger suicide drones with like 100-200 km range.

And also make it be a unmaned sub drone carrier that aren't bigger than any of the current biggest subs (might even be smaller, and just get more of it).
Suicide drones sound like an interesting concept, but you could do way more with it. What if instead we put a rocket engine on those drones so they can go faster and further, make them into cylinder shapes for efficient storage, and then store them in VLS cells? We could call it the JY-18 or something. Crazy idea, I know.

Drones are a lot more versatile than rockets.

I didn't notice this thread was created as early as 2013! Let me come with a crazy idea regarding the war in Ukraine.

Russian had a big trouble attacking the Azovstal Steel Plant. Their troops had problems entering or going too deep inside the underground complex of the plant. What about using unmanned combat vehicle equipped with bomb. When the UCV encounter enemy inside the complex, the UCV will rush with full speed to the enemy and detonate the the bomb on it. Does it work?

Could work but the UCV needs have a good AI and the wheels to be able to navigate around the underground complex.

A unmanned civilian drone strapped with bombs could be a better idea, but there's the difficulty still with the navigation AI to navigate around the tunnel.

I have another idea on how to siege the tunnel. What if we use this to allow troops to move in and block the tunnel passage?

If the UCV is meant to identify and engage its targets without human input, you'll probably get accused of war crimes. Otherwise they could be jammed, I suppose.
