A good example

Here's an example of how I look at COIN

JF-17 = $20million

4x CH-4 Drones = $4million

So the drones end up 5x cheaper than a JF-17 whilst providing way more COIN capability.

How good are the armor on those planes, e.g. can Super Tucano withstand a 50cal in the engine compartment? I think that drones are a better against a enemy without jamming capacity. Against a more advanced foe A10 or SU25 should be a better pick as a good pilot or the propaganda value should be higher than the plane cost for medium economies like Pakistan/Iraq/Brazil.

With DAESH reportedly in possession of Manpads, air-borne COIN operations are suddenly more risky. Syrian regime already lost a Mig-21 day before yesterday.

That depends on a number of factors, Low level manned are certainly high risk. High level and or unmanned is another matter.
