No doubt about it.
Mao is labelled a mass murderer for the mismanagement of famine brought about by drought and floods.
But the hypocritic West controlled mouthpieces gave the British a pass for causing millions to die in the 1943 Bengal famine.
.
Hence its completely irrelevant what the west thinks.

Also worth mentioning, supposed "famine" that led to no drop in life expectancy, US "black book of communism" counting deaths from old age as having died from "famine" lol. Similar bogus methods perhaps as counting telephone numbers for COVID deaths.

China did have food insecurity for the most vulnerable and medicine shortage during the first decade after ww2 (similar to Venezuela nowadays), but by the same definition, modern India has been in a permanent famine since its founding.

Bengal famine and the Russian civil war famine were man made catastrophes of a completely different scale, and can arguably be considered intentional genocide for the former and unintentional genocide for the latter.

None of us know—that’s the challenge right now,” he said. “We just have to be very humble and say we don’t know what the next shoe to drop is.”

It’s also possible that “we begin to see what I call a ‘soft landing,’” a gradual lowering in the number of cases, he added.

Osterholm sees no evidence, however, that COVID is turning into a seasonal virus like the flu and that one vaccine a year will suffice, like some White House officials recently suggested.

The virus, he says, is a “three act play.”

“I think we’re only in the second act,” he said. “That’s the problem.”
