How are the Chinese mRNA vaccine trials? Any new development?

Walvax is still in Phase III, so no new development. Don't expect a miracle though. From immunogenicity data it's expected to be as effective as Clover's protein subunit vaccine, in other words better than AZ and J&J but worse than Moderna and Pfizer. But being as good as Clover would already be a success. Don't forget how CureVac failed. Walvax has much more relaxed storage requirement than Moderna and Pfizer too, so more suitable for developing countries. If successful it can really help building China's mRNA vaccine supply chain.

So the author/editors had the choice of two ways of framing the report:

1. Inactivated vaccines have been crucial - now immunity is waning
2. China's COVID vaccines have been crucial - now immunity is waning

The first is accurate and scientific, the second is inaccurate and political. But they just had to go with the second.

In any case I would read this article along with:

So apparently people who first got infected then vaccinated have a broader immunity to different variants of the virus. Some theorized that it might have to do with actual infections prime the body for all parts of the virus and not just the spike protein. Someone should research to see if the same benefits are provided by inactivated vaccines. It might turn out to be the case that inactivated vaccines + a more targeted booster provide broader immunity than vaccines targeting the spike protein alone.

Inhalable vector-based COVID-19 vaccine increases antibodies 300-fold, better than mRNA & inactivated type as booster

So overall, the research has come to the conclusion that using a booster shot that is different from the first two doses will increase the immunity manifold more than continuing with using the same type of vaccine.

Moderna is more effective because it is administered at a higher dosage than Biontech.
