Re: Computer Talk!!

The Diamond 2 is more of evolutionary refinements over the older one, but I would say the bigger screen is major plus. Its easy to outgrow a 2.8" screen, the 3.2" is a plus. Collectively they all add up.

Built in memory is bigger than the old Touch Diamond (288mb vs. 192mb), although Touch Pros and the CDMA Diamond already has the 288mb.

Built in ROM is higher now, at 512mb vs. 256mb before. That means it will be packaged with more software, and there is more room to upgrade the firmware.

The Opera browser that comes with the Diamond 2 has a zoom feature, which is not available on the older models. I managed to install a copy of this particular browser on my Diamond and it works very well even on the older device.

It has new touch screen keyboards. I also manage to update my Diamond firmware to this one.

More Touchflo interface improvements.

5 megapixel camera vs. 3.2m on the old one.

Windows Mobile 6.5 upgradable.

1100mah battery vs. 950mah before.

Re: Computer Talk!!

Power consumption of Windows Mobile devices are bad. Yes, the way software is written does affect power consumption. Yes, if the processor has to execute less code to do one thing, it saves power. The 1100mah helps over the 950mah, but I don't think its enough. Probably helps to carry a spare and do all the power saving things.

---close all multitasking and memory resident applications when not in use.
---turn off bluetooth when not in use.
---turn off Wifi when not in use.
---turn off data connections if you're not using the internet.
---adjust the screen lighting to dim.
---use only GSM, which uses less power than 3G at 2100 which is the common international band. Higher frequencies consume more power. However removing 3G may defeat the reason of your purchase.

The CDMA version of the Diamond in US carriers like Sprint sport a 1340mah. It might interesting to check if the battery size is compatible. The AT&T version of the Touch Pro aka HTC Fuze sports a 1200mah battery.

Re: Computer Talk!!

You might find this interesting. Note that the mobile phone penetration in the US is about 69% and China about 49%.

In its drive to become a true wireless city, Hong Kong's Office of the Telecommunications Authority has published for the first time the statistics of local mobile data usage, which showcase a surge to 147 Terabytes as of January 2009, or an average amount of 44 Mbytes per 2.5G/3G mobile user for that particular month.

Apart from mobile data usage, the number of 2.5G and 3G mobile phone users has increased by 15% on a year-on-year basis reaching 3.35 million in January 2009. The total number of mobile phone users is 11.43 million and this represents a penetration rate of over 163%.

"We are pleased to see the remarkable growth of mobile data usage, which indicates that members of the public are increasingly used to deploy the mobile service for transmission and reception of mobile data. This is consistent with the trend observed in other advanced economies and demonstrates that Hong Kong has matured as a leading wireless city in the region," a spokesperson from OFTA stated in a press release.

This data, as of January 2009, represents four times and 14 times the mobile data usage over the same period in 2008 and 2007, respectively.

Rumors from China of a different kind...

It seems that someone managed to get a hold of a Palm Pre, or a shell of it, and compared a Palm Centro and the Apple iPhone. Here with pictures of it.

The claim is that the Palm Pre is now currently in mass production. If this is true, then the US and global introduction may be imminent. Woohoo! I've been waiting for this!

Re: Computer Talk!!

With the kind of models they're coming out, I'm not optimistic with Acer. They lack the style and panache of the HTC, and sticking with Windows Mobile will only bring you this much (*pinch*). Windows Mobile has too many disadvantages and kludges to be a mass market mobile OS. In Asia, you build one thing like Windows Mobile phones, then use another, like Symbian phones and Nokias. These companies like Acer need to practice what they preach. Otherwise they need to adopt Symbian and Android solutions. Furthermore, the phone market is far more conscious in style and user experience, not like the PC market where one dull system after another competes on features and price. Asus is ahead of Acer in this department and even they're not going anywhere.

Apple appears to be on a roll. They just announced their 2nd quarterly results, and even though overall sales are down, they're way ahead of the industry curve. Also, the sales of iPhones and iPod Touches are up year to year, and its significantly higher than analyst estimates. This helped AT&T grabbed better results for the quarter. There is plenty of rumors that Apple is going to release some form of netbook this year.
