That's great if Windows 8.1 works for you, but for my kind of work like an architectural drafter Window's 7 is good enough. I just need process speed and gigs of ram to allow my laptop to run smoothly.

Win 8.1 should run faster on the same hardware.

That said, I do agree with you. If the OS is good enough to get the job done, then there's really no compelling reason to shell out another hundred or so dollars to buy the so-called latest and greatest.

Frankly, I only upgraded because I got Windows 8 for about $15 dollars, and the 8.1 update after that was free. :) .

Windows 8 starts up much faster than Windows 7, and there are some nice experience in Windows Explorer than what you'd find on Windows 7. However, the lack of the Start menu is really a draw back for Windows 8. I replaced the HDD of my laptop with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro, it's just great even it's Windows 7.

Running Windows 8.1 here for things like deep SkyDrive integration, faster speed, etc. Not gimmicks to me.

I do also like the look of it, which is sort of a gimmick I guess.
Hehehe.

Yo baby may be Windows 8, but yo sweetheart is Windows 7 and yo Daddy is Windows XP, but yo grandpappy is Windows, and you know what? yo Great Grandpappy is MS-DOS!

...and way back down the line someplace, you probably be descended from RSX-11M+! LOL!

We are running Windows 7 and we are happy with it. A friend of my wife has windows 8 and dislikes it immensely..

I'm planning on buying a Chromebook soon.. gotta have my toys!

Ewww Chromebooks.

Indeed, there are so many toys to buy other than a chromebook.

Fore computer geeks a Chromebook would be an insult to them, I can understand that, but I think it would worked perfectly for my parents generation who really doesn't need all the gigs, bells, and whistles attached with it for gamers and programmers. It's a pretty good basic notebook for people who just needs it for their daily basic needs that's all.

Exactly. I just need it to surf the web. I'm 60 dont you know.

We don't save any files, photos, play games, 'chat', Skype etc etc. Well my wife does talk via some kind of video link to some distant grand kids.

We have a desktop, laptop, 2 tablets & 2 roku streaming players.

I'm not crazy about my tablet..it' s too touchy..

I wonder how many people even know what RSX-11M+ was, or it's earlier RSX-11M,RSX-11D, or RSX-11A,, what they were on, and who made them? That is without doing a google that is.

Kind of dates me, and my early years using computers.

I say that as someone who owns a Chromebook, and understood that it is by nature a pure browsing machine. The combination of slow speed, low screen resolution, tinny speakers, and small display make it even less ideal for the prospective "older" generation to use, imo. They especially "need" bigger, higher quality displays, and better sound. Let alone someone who likes "bells and whistles". :/ .

I have the Samsung Chromebook, if that counts for anything. They remind me of the netbook fad a few years back.
