I think they can always improve the tail look a bit, always reminded me of something with a lawn-mower engine strapped to it.

or a hobbist's gas engine RC plane.... Maybe they have it exposed like this during testing for convenience if they need to work on the engine? I'm sure it's not hard to add a cover around the engine.

Re: New Chinese UAV

A cover will not only improve the look but it'll help reduce the heat signature and possibly the noise level. But then they'll also need to solve the problem of getting enough airflow to cool the enclosed engine.

A well designed cowling will not only reduce drag and heat signature but also improve the cooling air flow.

Btw the craft shown in #674 resemble early Rutan designs, that could be made by amateur builders. they too had a retractable nose gear and non-retractable main gear. See

PLA also eperiments with the use of drones from ships;
(to extend the detection range of the ships own systems)
any specifications on capability of Chinese drone mounted surveiilance radars for army/navy use?

Re: New Chinese UAV

The CH-4 looks good - the earlier pics with the lawnmower engine really need a cowling. Seems like a very interesting array of different UAVs...

. I was wondering if there are any jet powered drones under development like the US Global Hawk or Avenger. The latter has stealth features like internal weapons storage and it seems to be the way forward. I know the Chinese have developed the Tianchi which is jet powered but they might need to concentrate in this area a bit more...
