You have to keep in mind that Beidou is a relatively recent thing, and even then higher ups in the PLA were skeptical of satellite guided munitions due to potential for satellite jamming/interference. This has changed, however.

Tbh I sort of doubt this "PLA skepticism towards beidou" thing.

PLA uses lots of LACMs and SRBMs and IRBMs all of which would use satellite guidance as a significant part of their overall guidance system, and they've been happy to invest in those heavily.

Also, for PGMs, there are many many guidance systems outside of satellite that would still be fairly useful -- laser, EO/IMIR, MMW radar etc are all very valid guidance systems if satellite is left out, yet the pictures of PLA PGMs we have still is basically only limited to 500 kg LGBs only.

So I don't think the lack of PLA PGMs that we see is attributable to past distrust of satellite guidance.

Holy cow we can stop trying to eke out every little bit of defensiveness for the PLA when it doesn't add anything?
I haven't been doing anything like that and I don't need to defend the PLA, it's making a splendid case for itself. The reason I wrote my post is because there's a tendency here to build a skyscraper of speculations founded on very feeble assumptions. An assertion is assumed to be true and pages of digital ink are written giving justifications and reasons for it to be true. Someone has to come along and ask "is it actually true?"

Just stop.

to be fair the PLA seems to have A LOT of drones. the army uses drones extensively for recon and targeting especially the artillery units. what was referred to as being deployed only in small numbers is just GJ1/2 drones.

Why don’t we just keep it simple and assume it’s just a budget constraint? PLAAF is developing many advanced systems, especially H-20 and 6th gen fighters, as well as procuring many J-20 and other expensive systems such as early warning radar/satellites. Meanwhile its budget is only 30% of USAF.

A lot of USAF budget are going in some politicians wide pockets... it's hard to compare budget numbers but it's way easier to compare acquisition numbers.
