JL-9h for training pilots for the AC.

Looks like Guizhou is trying to help the PLANAF chose which trainer they like better!

The JL-9 is a simple, rugged platform, it might not be as advanced but its proponents have a strong case, the T-38 Talon isn't all that advanced either and a the start of a replacement program will begin in 2012 but the USAF will be operating Talons for a long while as their replacements go through a tendering process. The cancelation of the WP-14 and WS-12 projects though could be a major blow to the JL-9's future though, a modern turbofan engine like the WS-12 could have been a big boost to the JL-9

JL-9 is a waste of time..... it is essentially JJ-7 and it doesn't stay long enough in air. The pilot will get trained on taking off and landing (which Mig-21/J-7 airframe is horrible for) and not much else.

Posted by =GT at CDF ... but IMO the numbers look a bit strange !

Otherwise it would "confirm" a PLANAF-regiment (within the 7. Division along the JH-7A).

Nice set of pictures! It seems that the PLANAF prefers the JL-9 to the L-15, especially now that Guizhou is showing off its JL-9H

I will be surprised if the JL-9 single-engined is favoured over the the twin-engined L-15. I would have thought twin engines would be better for carrier training with the extra power giving easier take-offs.Could it be the case that JL-9H is simply for single-engined carrier operations training and we are yet to see the L-15 carrier version?

The land-based one just finished(probably) a few months ago, it'll take a while longer for a carrier-based one to appear.

Not the number of engines, but a higher ratio of thrust to weight gives that extra power for take off. You might want two engines in order to get home after losing one engine, But the chance of losing an engine is doubled for the twin engined aircraft. The comparable USN trainer is the T-45, which also has one engine.
The advantage is lower acquisition and maintenance costs, to be balanced against possibly losing more aircraft due to engine failure.

Re: JL-15 and other trainers

No question; JL10 is technological the better plane!
But it is to specifically tailored to the next generation of fighters, for which effectual training needs to be done on two-seat planes of the same type anyway!
so Jl 9 wins because:
1. it"s a bettter all-round plane
2. it's cheaper, so it saves money for other more important projects
3. it will be available much sooner
4. development and production will pose lesser problems and delays
5. it has a better (both political and military) potential for sales abroad

Sorry mates, even I would have liked to see the JL 10 in service (maybe small numbers as a lead-in trainer to JL10, JL11, JL20?)
but overall JL 9 is both polically and military a sound choice.
