I agree about safety. I visited Urumqi as a kid, back in 2006, I think. The locals there used to rob visitors pretty badly. Now, in China, I can easily walk around with a wad of cash (but it's a shame no one uses cash anymore ) and they won't bother me.

I have a friend who works as an actor and animator in Barcelona who was robbed on the street. All the police said, and how they helped, was, "Be more careful next time." I'd add, "Be quicker."

Have you been to China recently or watched tourist videos on China? Maybe up until 2019 you might've been right, but Chinese people don't really engage in that kind of behavior anymore. A lot of folks going to China as part of the visa free travel agreements have said as much.

I went in 2024, and compared to 2014 it's like night and day. I'm amazed by how clean even the countryside is. I visited my ancestral home area in the country side, and last time there was trash everywhere, public bathrooms were scarce and extremely dirty, there was honking everywhere I went. Everything's done a 180, it's pretty incredible.

Chinese viewers have taken offence to a line in episode four, where Jun’s character asks: “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall near the border.” Viewers have construed it as an insult to both the country and its people, and it has now become the focal point for larger complaints about the drama’s depiction of China.

“The dialogue smears us as crazy for favouring war, the villains frequently speak broken Chinese, and the use of Hong Kong's old neighbourhoods combined with a gloomy filter to portray Dalian as a slum. The targeting is self-evident,” reads one comment, originally in Chinese, on Douban.

Luxury brands like US skincare giant La Mer, French fashion house Louis Vuitton, and Swiss watch and jewellery house Piaget, for whom Jun is a brand ambassador, have scrubbed her presence from their platforms, according to Jing Daily. Louis Vuitton deleted every Jun-related post from its Weibo account, La Mer removed all Jun-related content from its Weibo and Xiaohongshu accounts and simultaneously cleared its global Instagram feed, and Piaget followed by deleting her ambassador profile from its global website and pulling advertisements from its China flagship store.

Xi Jinping initiated something called "the "Global Civilization Initiative". Apparently because of it China is opening the door for US rappers and other music artists to perform in China. Rappers were banned before. If you believe in the Western definition of soft power, soft power goes to the music artists but Xi got what soft power really means. He supposedly saw Kayne West preforming in Hainan as a benefit for China. How? Because Kanye reaped praise upon China for allowing him to perform there while at the same time the US critics that hate China criticized China for allowing him to perform. That's what real "soft" power is. It's not you begging to be liked by them. It's them begging to be liked by you. Why do you think Republicans hate how the NBA sucks up to China? Because China makes the NBA a lot of money. They recently criticized Lebron James for writing an op-ed in Xinhua imploring the good relationship between the NBA and China. Watch in the future the US will enact laws to prevent US celebrities from China. They won't like how their citizens won't have the stomach for war with China if their celebrities are praising China.

To be honest, this whole controversy about the Korean show and demanding it be boycotted and everyone fired over it is stupid and makes Chinese seem oversensitive and insecure.

Ever heard the phrase: "The lion doesn't concern himself with the opinions of sheep"?

Honestly, this incident hasn't generated much public opinion in China, but that doesn't mean China should ignore the self-aggrandizement of these ants.
Tolerating South Korea's foolish behavior will only embolden other countries. A moderate response is necessary; it's like killing a chicken to scare the monkey.

Voice of America Stops All Broadcasting After Government Shuts Down
During past shutdowns, the federal news agency continued broadcasting to authoritarian countries, as it was considered essential to national security.
The Trump administration suspended all news broadcasts from Voice of America and furloughed all its journalists on Wednesday after the government shut down, effectively fulfilling its efforts to shutter the agency two days after a judge ordered it to reinstate workers and restore programming.

Nearly all the 80 or so remaining employees at the agency, which broadcast news to countries with limited press freedom, are furloughed. Mass furloughs and the suspension of news programming did not occur during past shutdowns, as providing news coverage to authoritarian countries like Russia, China and Iran was considered essential to national security.

“Voice of America broadcasts have been suspended due to a funding cut from the United States government, which has led to a government shutdown,” reads a recent notice posted on the website for the news network’s Persian-language service. Similar notices appeared on the network’s websites for other language services, including Mandarin, Dari and Pashto.

But a shutdown preparation document published last year by the news group’s oversight agency, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, listed about 650 Voice of America employees and journalists as essential to “perform activities expressly authorized by law.”
