RFA is shutting down, and their director is complaining about it in NYT.
Despite the roadblocks and intimidation, a national survey by found that at least 44.1 million users managed to break through China’s Great Firewall weekly to read and listen to RFA’s reports in Mandarin, Cantonese, Uyghur and Tibetan. They seek out RFA to learn the truth about subjects such as natural disasters, mass protests, internal party conflicts and Taiwan’s democracy. The connection goes both ways: Ordinary citizens have provided the invaluable news tips that have fueled RFA’s reporting for almost 30 years.
Those numbers are total BS. I remember looking at their X for various RFA when X also shows view counts. The tweet views were either low like 100s or super high like 100,000 views but with 5 likes. I think the primary viewers were just other US "Free and Fair" press using them as the source of other propaganda pieces. Some journalist from bbc or cbs even accidently mention that when they found out RFA was being shutdown. It was just a huge grift or jobs program for angry dissidents , assylum seekers, and just crappy journalist/liberal arts major that couldnt get real gigs..
