Its weird indeed, I get why EU, UK and japan didn't have sub 10nm nodes. But not having capabilities for something like 20nm plus nodes was a big surprise. But luckily we have posters over here that explained it with mask, capex and material costs. Learned a lot in this thread and I'm sure I will learn a lot more in the future.
@BlackWindMnt same here bro and I'm truly grateful to each one of them.

I heard that the automotive industry needs to redesign most of their older chips, so 28~22nm seems like a good node to service the Japanese automotive industry. So they actually can survive the EV transition happening this decade.

The Electric Viking youtube channel made a video about this subject, that a lot of the chip used these day are from the pre mobile phone era. But I haven't done any further research on it, just took his word for it.

That's because IGBTs and inverters are not made with these processes. IGBTs and inverters are the most important pieces of semiconductors for EVs. Biggest maker of IGBTs and inverters is currently Infineon, who fabs them in Germany and China, along with others like Fuji, Denso, ON, Cree and so on. Plenty of IGBT are fabbed in China but these are foreign branded, and China also imports plenty from Japan and Korea, such as Denso and Samsung. There are now some Chinese companies that are doing IGBTs, most notably BYD. BYD is the only car manufacturer that makes its own IGBT. Recently Huawei obtained a patent for a SiC IGBT and they might be interested in getting into this business because IGBT is the heart of the EV's electronics.

Building a Fab that will make the most cutting edge mobile SoCs for Apple and Qualcomm isn't going to supply IGBTs for EVs and car manufacturers. That's why there is a chip shortage. No one really understands that building a fab for smartphone chips isn't going to be making chips for EVs.

Anglo americans must be experiencing an extinction response; after having gotten used to ordering Asians around and lording over the bodies and enslavement of Asian peoples, the anglos are now tyrannically threatening Koreans who refuse to give away trade secrets to white Anglo authorities
@FairAndUnbiased bro the Asian Spring had started and SK will fight tooth and nail, its economy is at stake. With that others will follow just as you prophesied.;)

When US came to harvest S.Korea, the Koreans hid all of their advanced tech and they left this for America to harvest:

They should at least show that they can Produce a sample. Like how SMIC made 14nm huawei Kirin chip but had to use foreign machines. I believe they have domestic 28nm capability but I’d like to see a chip made as an example. Otherwise it’s all just talk to me. But that’s my personal opinion, not trying to start a debate or inflame an issue.
You will know it when Huawei is back.

The only way for South Korea to survive is to abandon the US dollar and embrace the Yuan.

Intel's Indian chief in product development hired even more India engineers. It is common that Indians hire even more Indians in Silicon Valley. It was said that ethnic Chinese and other Asians are much better chip engineers. The result is Intel lagging TSMC and samsung.
Here's the links to prove what you are saying. Sad but true.
The more I think about it, we should actually thank these Indian engineers for crippling Intel to allow China to catch up.

Yea its a pretty open secret in STEM that Indians favor other Indians in the corporate world. There's some pushback but not enough, a combination of right-wing Americans really liking Indians because they're also right-wing or at least neo-liberal and left-wing Americans thinking that the accusation that Indians favor other Indians over ability is racism means its hard to avoid. That plus in a lot of companies they're already pretty well imbedded in the corporate hierarchy.

Boeing's 737Max issue is due to hiring Indians over Ability, its just not politically correct to say so. A lot more of that will happen if trends continue.

There's some pushback though, especially from (at least, with my field) other minorities in the US (black, hispanic, asian) in demanding more comprehensive skill tests before hiring.
