SMIC will consider strengthening the development and deployment of first and second-generation FinFETs and expanding the reliability and competitiveness of its platform.

Means the mass production of 14nm and N+1 (8nm) chips? and whose the customer?

SMIC plans to expand its mature 12-inch line by 10,000 wafers and its mature 8-inch line by no less than 45,000 wafers this year, according to company Co-CEOs Zhao Haijun and Mong-Song Liang.
The leading contract chipmaker from China said in its fourth-quarter earnings release on Thursday that the current capacity in the foundry industry is tight and demand for mature processes, in particular, remains strong, with mature capacity expected to remain full.
In order to meet customer demand, SMIC expects to spend $4.3 billion in capital expenditures this year, with most of it going to mature process expansions and a small portion to advanced processes, civil construction of new joint venture projects in Beijing, and others.
Under the influence of the US entity list, SMIC will consider strengthening the development and deployment of first and second-generation FinFETs and expanding the reliability and competitiveness of its platform.
SMIC's revenue for the fourth quarter of 2020 was $981 million, and the company reported record financial results for the year, with profit attributable to the company of $716 million, an increase of 204.9%.
Because of its inclusion on the US government's entity list, SMIC's revenue target for the first half of 2021 is approximately $2.1 billion, with a full-year gross margin target of approximately 15 percent.

SMIC says unable to keep up with customer demand for certain types of chips: co-CEO

Thu, February 4, 2021, 8:17 PM

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) cannot meet customer demands for certain mature technologies and its plants have been running "fully loaded" for several quarters, it said on Friday.
Zhao Haijun, co-CEO of China's largest chipmaker, made the comments during a conference call after its latest quarterly results. He also said external sanctions would continue to affect the company's revenue growth.

SMIC is a key player in China's efforts to build up its domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, but sanctions by the former Trump administration have curbed U.S. companies from supplying it.

The company is also an important player in the global semiconductor supply chain, which is under heavy pressure as pandemic lockdowns drive up demand for electronics such as laptops and phones. Global automakers, in particular, have been caught off guard by the chip shortage, and firms from General Motors to Stellantis have announced that they have slowed down production and furloughed thousands of workers.

Okay.....recently SMIC recently completed the construction of it huge SN1 12inch FAB for 14nm Finfet Chips in Shanghai.
There are plans for another plant called SN2 which will be ready by 2024.
SMIC already produces 12nm and 14nm FINFET Chips and will be expanding the production of these Chips at this plant in 2021.
This was discussed earlier where the Shanghai Local Government was promoting the production of 12nm and 14nm Chips.
According to this CNTechpost article SMIC will strenghten production of 1st and 2nd Gen FINFET.
This means that SMIC will be producing its 14nm and N+1 Chips(April) at this new plant.
It appears the new SN1 production line is able to produce the N+1 Chips as well.
So looks like SMIC will mass produce its N+1 Chips this coming April as mentioned by Liang Mongsong.
SMIC will have no problems producing the 12nm and 14nm Chips for local and overseas customers.
SMIC is only restricted from producing Chips 10nm and below.
Will it sell to Huawei?
With the new Entity list laws, SMIC may be forced to supply Huawei with Chips.
Huawei has just released a new Mobile Phone with Kirin 710A 14nm Chips.
Most likely made by SMIC.

We somehow missed it. A huawei phone with a smic 710A has been out for months

Thanks very much for the info and updates, Now that we had connected all the dots and able to clear up any confusion, it's safe to say that the 14nm and even 10nm will be mass produce by SMIC using domestic equipment this year as you mention from your previous post. May I ask if you have any info for the domestic line for 7nm? If we're (SMIC) able to mass produce 7nm (N+2) within the 1'st quarter of 2022 is enough for Huawei to stay market relevant in the SOC sector.

@Hendrik_2000

Thanks for the clarification, I'm puzzled what the US sanction had done is create an artificial shortage for chips and instead of Intel benefiting its the other way around and nullify its intention. The unintended consequences of gov't intervention, that is why China had not retaliated instead of sanctioning company he sanction the people responsible and let the market run it's course.

Which is why I don't think they will ever build an EUV fab in the US.
Unlikely to succeed in the short term even if they wanted to. Chinese (Taiwanese) scientists musts be imported into US. Otherwise it's no different from what Intel is trying to do.

1. the capacity for advanced node (<= 28 nm) is 15,000 wafer per month.
去年年底我们已经完成了15000片安装产能的目标

2. The proportion of revenue from advanced node fell from 14.6% in the third quarter of 2020 to 5.0% in the fourth quarter

I was optimistic about SMIC and its development of advanced nodes but looking at the Q4 figures and statements it is clear to me that sub 28nm nanometer is not going anywhere for the time being.
SMIC will not catch up with Samsung or TSMC any time soon.
China's fabless companies are becoming world class so it is important that TSMC and Samsung fab services will be available for them.
Unfortunately Huawei's smartphone business prospects are very bleak unless there is a change in the US policy. Huawei needs 14nm and 7nm Fab services to build its Kirin chipsets. 28nm is not good enough for Kirin. The smartphone chipset business is too competitive. That is a shame as Hisilicon Kirin chips had reached world class level snd this will be lost fir the forseeable future.

@Alb

I feel for your concern, but the year is still young, the good news is that the 14nm and 12nm domestic line is ready as WTAN had posted (useful for 5G based station chip), what I'm waiting and wanted to hear from him is the news on the 7nm domestic line, If being available by 1st quarter 2022 as forecast , then I'm happy.

The SN1 FAB began construction before the sanctions on SMIC, so it mainly uses Foreign equipment, but SMIC will definitely be swapping out the American Equipment and replacing it with China Made or Non-American Equipment whenever possible.
SMIC will also definitely be introducing the SMEE 28nm DUVL to the production line when it becomes available later this year.
Certainly the goal of SMIC going forward will be to build a De-Americanised SN1 production line as far as possible.
So yes, by 2022 SMIC would have a
De-Americanised production line for 7nm Chips.
Quite a number of China Semiconductor equipment manufacturers already currently produce 14nm equipment and they are now working on 7nm equipment.
Some people say that SMIC N+2 can be produced using the existing equipment in the SN1 FAB.
Others say that N+2 is meant to be produced using EUVL.
We will have to wait to see what move SMIC makes next.
