Quite simple, like Pelosi said, they don't want their grandchildren living in a world ruled by Chinese.

Einstein said: “It would be a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races. For the likes of us the mere thought is unspeakably dreary.”

They say that, but in reality they also know nuclear war means they will die or end up living in an inhabitable world.

Basically they're trying to delay the inevitable of non-whites ruling from now on.

nahhh, I don't believe it is the main reasons .. something more personal .... Trump is a kind of person that think only himself and his empire, nothing else. Perhaps Xi didn't want to receive his calls ;)

I am still not sure 100%, why Trump "hates" China so much, look like a personal matter .. did China ban Ivanka brand or any other Trump's businesses in China?
I don't think he started out hating China. Before the election, Trump did business with China every chance he got because he could make money. But when his election bid started, it was obvious that China was growing to be the greatest challenge to American global supremacy and that caused a lot of insecurity and ill will in the American population, especially the lower tiers. Trump always defaults to the most primal caveman feelings to ignite his base so it was an easy choice for him to attack China in his speeches in order to draw support for himself for election. Problem is, he won the election and thus he needed to actually take on China as the nemesis that he painted it to be but he was not prepared to do it. China upstaged him left and right and Trump could not deliver on his promise to essentially turn the tide against the trend of China outgrowing the US. His repeated frustrations turned to hate and his continuous failures supplied the fuel until he genuinely seethed at the thought of China (although perhaps not as much as he hates the Democrats). China was the tree he chose to hang himself on and the tree would not let him down. China wasn't supposed to be that hard to deal with; it was supposed to be any big fish in the sea for a proud captain to affirm his ego on but instead, it became his Moby Dick.

Any word on when China will be able to achieve atomic layer deposition (ALD)?

Based on this report I don't see any domestic companies listed as major players in the Chinese market:

That's more like 4-5 years, which matches the current rate.
@Skywatcher

Can you elaborate, 5 years to whom TSMC? Until SMIC received SMEE or CETC EUVL by 2023 and local equipment marker can able to develop the corresponding 5nm or 3nm machine equipment?

Matching TSMC is a moving target, maybe in 5 years time they may mass produce 2nm or 1nm chips?

Assuming SMIC produces 3nm in 2026-227, that puts it about 4-5 years after TSMC (assuming TSMC mass 3nm happens in 2022).

Currently SMIC's N+2 is aiming for 2022 mass production, and TSMC's non EUV 7nm went to market in 2018.
