The Chinese Navy destroyer Qingdao (DDG 113) transit through the Pearl Harbor channel while being escorted by a harbor patrol boat as it arrives for a routine port visit. Two ships representing China’s Navy, the destroyer Qingdao (DDG 113) and the oiler Hongzehu (AOR 881) arrived in Pearl Harbor. During their visit, China’s Sailors will have the opportunity to interact with their U.S. counterparts and experience the unique culture of Hawaii.

Should be a good time for these PLAN sailors.

about the PLAN arrival in Pearl Harbor,HI..:china: That PLAN officer is none other than Deputy Commander, North Sea Fleet, Rear Adm. Wang Fushan. He did not want to miss this trip! I wonder how many other PLAN "brass" are on board for this deployment?

I was wondering why they only sent 113. I guess since it's the North Sea Fleet, they probably can't offer anything better than that right now.

113 is still a sharp looking ship.

China is apparently not interested in giving anybody a closeup look at any of their newer ships at this time. I'm sure, given a couple of more years, we may see one of these more capable Chinese guided missile destroyers visiting a foreign port.

I do believe that 168 will get sent out the next time south sea fleet is suppose to be visiting foreign port and maybe 136 or 137 will get sent out when East Sea fleet gets the call. 052C and 051C simply has too many issues right now (need to mature far more), before they can go too far from China.

Could be. I think they sent the best representive they could along with the 881 for replenishment purposes. Personally I would like to see them deploy the 167 or 168. Probally the cost opf deploying these ships is a factor as to which ships will be deployed.

If they really wanted to make a big impression, they would send an entire SAG consisting of the 170, the 168, the 139, and the 526, accompanined by the 881. Now THAT would really be something for a foreign port call, particulalry in the US.

That would be impressive. However does the PLAN have the ablity to do that? How much would it cost? Cost is probally the biggest factor. Maybe the PLAN is fearful of mechnical breakdowns during such a deployment. That would be an embarresment for the PLAN. The PLAN has no foward bases and no logistical suppourt outside of the western Pacific.

@_@ I don't think any navy today makes port-of-call goodwill visits with 5 frigates/destroyers at the same time.

Usually it's just 1-2 ships. Though if the PLAN was interested in gaining more operational experience, they could send multiple groups out at same time to different destinations.
