China's AH4 ultralight artillery is delivered for the first time, or will participate in the Middle East

"Modern Weapons" was recently learned that the North China Company of China Ordnance Industry Group first delivered the AH4 ultralight 155mm cannon to a certain country in the Middle East. It is alleged that the first batch of AH4 ultralight guns will be equipped with an artillery company in the country to prepare and train in advance to obtain initial combat capability.

The journal has previously published a report on the first export of AH4, which has aroused widespread concern. The reason why the outside world pays attention to the export of China's foreign trade weapons is that, in addition to this is China's first export of such equipment, another important reason is that the region where AH4 is exported is the Middle East. At present, the situation in the region is turbulent, whether AH4 will participate in the war, how to fight in such a way, whether the performance will be satisfactory, these have become the focus of everyone's attention.

Will AH4 participate in the war?

The target of AH4 is the X country in the Middle East. The country has been participating in anti-terrorism operations in the region and has formed a joint army with Saudi Arabia to fight the Yemeni armed forces in Yemen. It is said that the first batch of AH4 has only one equipment, and will be the first to train the soldiers. Considering that the country has not equipped China's 155mm artillery before, there is no relevant experience, so the preparation and training time of AH4 will be longer, and it is estimated that it will not participate in the war in the near future.

In what way will the future fight?

The AH4 is called an ultra-light artillery with a total weight of only about 4 tons. It was considered to be transported by helicopter at the beginning of the design, mainly for mountain operations. The country where AH4 is exported is mainly desert terrain, with only a small amount of mountainous land, which has attracted the author's interest.

In the desert terrain, the AH4 can use the tractor to carry out ground movement. I have seen the AH4 carry out truck traction test when it leaves the factory. The designer designed a detachable traction structure at the muzzle of the gun, which can be easily hung on the hook behind the truck. The AH4 artillery towed by trucks has a conversion time of no more than 3 minutes.

In mountain operations, the AH4 is mainly maneuverable for rapid maneuvering. It has strong strategic and tactical maneuverability, and the transition time of the battle will be shorter, which has great advantages for opponents who do not have this ability. The author noticed that the region where the country is currently engaged in anti-terrorism operations - Yemen has a large number of mountainous terrain, which is the ideal battlefield to exploit the advantages of this weapon.

In addition, the country is still a coastal country. According to the designer of the gun, he had intentionally developed a shore-proof ultra-light cannon, using the coastal anti-salt fog corrosion technology of the shore defense equipment he had mastered, and developed the shore-proof ultra-light 155mm artillery. The gun utilizes its aiming, direct aiming, and semi-direct aiming firing capabilities to combat sea targets.

As can be seen from the above, the ultra-light 155 gun can be used in a variety of environments, and its tactical flexibility is still very high.

Will performance be satisfactory?

At present, the world's artillery with the same AH4 is only the US M777. This makes people want to compare the two unique artillery who is better or worse? According to the gun's designer, the technology used by the Chinese AH4 is not worse than the US M777, and even has its own characteristics and advantages, but the lack of AH4 is mainly actual combat experience. How is this gun used in the future? Are some of their designs suitable for the battlefield environment? These are things that need to be verified and accumulated.

China's domestic ultra-light artillery has not yet been developed, and it is still in the pre-research stage. The main purpose of China's development of foreign-funded ultra-light artillery is to accumulate experience for the development of domestic ultra-light artillery.

Comparison to M777 the first one is AH4 prformance wise almost the same. Why it is not in service with PLA? India bought 145 M777 but suffer damage on the gun barrel using domestic ammunition

On 26 June 2016, it was announced that 145 guns will be purchased by India for US$750 million.

maybe the mountain troops rely more on self propelled artillery?

But in some case road is not available . The only transport is helicopter and this AH4 is ideal because it can be carried by helicopter using poly rope under the helicopter
I know PLA standard artillery is truck mounted 122 mm gun.But this AH4 is 155 mm
There's also this thing. Also 122, but pretty nimble, can be airlifted as well.

But yea, 155 would be nice but probably not in a big rush to adopt them in a significant number right now. There still are a bunch of 152mm

Price and operatability is among 2 possible reasons, for one going with the only other 155 lightweight howitzer in existence the M777, just a single gun is the equivalent price tag of some SPGs on offer. Even the AH4 cannot be spared from this as it too requires special materials to construct.
Being so light weight also comes with a cost, judging by what pictures available, the gun is so threadbare to the point it has no APU and no built in gun rammer. Handling such a heavy weapon (it still weights 4.5 tons) purely on manpower and in oxygen thin atmospheres is a operational nightmare.

A correction to this post, the AH4 appears to do include a APU in its set up. But then again the 122mm caliber howitzer is lighter then the AH4 by a full 1.3 tons, that is some significant weight advantage for a artillery piece dated more than 50 years ago. The smaller caliber shell is off set by a higher rate of fire.

It looks like the PLA is keeping traditions alive. Calvary units are stationed at an altitude of 4200m on the Tibetan Plateau.

My all time favorite cavalry scene is this cavalry charge after a nuclear strike. @2:14

Interestingly one of the titles of the video states that this is the last "ride" of the PLA. It might be a pun on the "last ride of the valkyries". But it would make sense considering the mechanization of the PLA as a whole. Still personally I think that horses will still serve within the Armed Police units attached to border guard duties.
