I personally find the UN protocol a bit ridiculous. If low-power "blinding" lasers are not allowed, what about high power ones that are just as capable of being used as blinding lasers? I think the dazzler on the Type-99 got away with it because the PLA claimed that they were used to blind enemy tank sensors when it is perfectly capable of blinding infantry men as well.

Well... not really going to get into this deeply... too political... so I will only touch on it briefly. I remember reading the US issuing their troops in Iraq with laser dazzler to be attached to their M4. And those are not ban.

But when China create something new and with potential sales... these are banned.

I think you are overthinking this. The ZM-87 was reputed to be capable of permanent retinal damage, something that the U.S. dazzlers are inacaple of doing.

I do agree that we should steer clear of politics. Too many threads have closed as a result of nationalistic pissing contests.

There are three types of Chinese laser weapons that are currently confirmed: a low power dazzler currently banned by the protocol on blinding weapons, the dazzler deployed on the Type 99, and the high energy laser responsible for the 2006 satellite blinding. All other rumors on the Chinese laser program should be treated as such until official confirmation.

Those seem inferior to the chemical-laser and solid-state laser weapons USA is developing, which has the capability to DESTROY targets like in Star Wars.:coffee:

deuterium-fluoride (DF) chemical laser were already tested in China in the 1990s and are probably already being Further Developed since then. :china:

Gallaghan36 you watch too many Future Weapons Episodes. I wish Future Weapons Also featured weapons outside of US and NATO.

Well I wouldn't say that dazzlers are inferior to ABLs and THELs and vice versa since they are simply intended for different purposes. Would you say that the MP-40 is inferior to the Panzerfaust just because the MP-40 is ineffective against tank armor?

As Zhongfei stated China is known to have developed high-power chemical lasers since the early 90s. Making it an effective weapon, however, is a whole different story. Elaborate mirror systems used for aiming the beam must be developed and complex computers are needed to keep the beam trained upon the target. You also have to deal with unpleasant stuff like atmospheric distortion, vibrations, etc. This is why I stated in my post that all other news of Chinese laser weapons should be treated as fanboy material unless proven by official news.

Li Hui, Director of the Beijing Institute of Remote Sensing Equipment, a developer of optical precision and photoelectronic guidance systems for surface-to-air missiles, "has cited laser technology as the only effective means to counter cruise missiles and is the one who Cited the deuterium-fluoride (DF) chemical laser was tested by China in the 90's.

So this one is at least confirmed.

Those could be USA answer to China using the DF-21 as an anti ship cruise missile. Or bombard any other Naval vessel from afar.

But Then Again Df-21 being cheaper than a giant ship holding a Rail gun can be spammed on any fleet. So I see this thing has more advantage in fighting other Naval fleets than defeating Prepared Coastal defence.

it's not enough of a deterrent against the DF-31A even if it is fast enough to neutralize the missile. Reason? How many rail guns can the US deploy as well as being enough to stop every incoming missile?

I guess these are the successors to the MIRACL program (worthy successors they are and hopefully they'll be inducted!). Wonder if the USN is going to go for solid state in the future as well.
