chinese laser weapon development

Lockheed's similar 10kw system could also take out 60mm mortar rounds. Next for them will be 50-60kw that can take out RAM, and then a 100kw system. It looks like China is keeping up at an almost similar pace.

Article seems like sensationalist B.S. Do you know where I can get the link to the original video?

Nvmd I found it. The original video talks about targeting laser for anti-aircraft cannon, which isn't a DEW.

I think the news would've made rounds on here and other military forums back in 2012 if it were true.

Thanks, so that's what it was!

Going back to the anti-drone laser, if we have something like this in the unclassified realm, from a consortium that isn't one of China's traditional big defense contractors, makes you wonder what they have hidden away.

If you enlarge the label on the smaller projectile it reads number 3, with the date given as 98-9-17 (I think)

I think one is from a missile and the other a mortar or artillery round.

Interesting, could this have been some sort of lab testing? I only say that because if it had been on a target they shoot down with a laser, there would more likely be more damage from the crash.

If it is from a lab test, normally they would showcase a slab of steel with a hole burnt through. A missile cone through burnt in a lab has nothing to prove.

More of it here. It is not high powered going by the report.

China unveils laser weapon system to take down low-flying drones
Nov 3, 2014 12:53pm

The laser weapon system is effective against drones flying at up to 180 kph.

China has developed a highly accurate laser weapon system that can shoot down light drones at low altitude, state media reported.

The machine has a two-kilometre range and can bring down “various small aircraft” within five seconds of locating its target, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing a statement by the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP), one of the developers.

The system is expected to “play a key role in ensuring security during major events in urban areas” and address concerns on unlicensed mapping activities.

It is effective up to a maximum altitude of 500 metres and against aircraft flying at up to 50 metres per second (180 kph).

Likely choice for terrorists?

Manager with China Jiuyuan Hi-Tech Equipment Corp Yi Jinsong said that small-scale, unmanned drones are relatively cheap and easy to use, making them a likely choice for terrorists.

“Intercepting such drones is usually the work of snipers and helicopters, but their success rate is not as high and mistakes with accuracy can result in unwanted damage,” he said.

The system, which can be installed on vehicles, shot down more than 30 drones in a recent test with a “100 percent success rate” said the CAEP statement.

The academy is developing similar laser security systems with greater power and range, AFP said, quoting a Xinhuareport yesterday (Nov 2).

China typically deploys tight security for domestic political meetings, international conferences and sports events, looking to prevent public protests over issues such as illegal land seizures and corruption as well as any threats to the participants.
