From a very reliable Weibo leaker, the image shows a hybrid drivetrain technology demonstrator (built from a modified Type-86A IFV).

Hybrid as clean energy hybrid? I'm struggling to see the point of this on an IFV.

Hybrid as clean energy hybrid? I'm struggling to see the point of this on an IFV.
Advantages can range from:
- Decreased signatures from IR to sound. A vehicle can operate its weapons and sensors for an extended period of time without running its internal combustion engine. When batteries are running low it can be recharged with a relatively stealthy generator. The AC can still remain running without the main engine, keeping the crew comfortable thus reducing fatigue. It's like how you can run the AC over night in a Prius much more efficiently than a traditional ICE vehicle when camping. Battery powers the system and gets occasionally charged by the ICE, only using about a gallon of fuel over night.
- Greater fuel efficiency/range, especially for missions that require constantly changing speeds. Beyond regenerative breaking, the generator can operate at a more optimal rpm than the traditional system.
- Greater capability to power electricity intensive systems like directed energy weapons, radars, charging drones, etc.
- Increased survivability. Ability to have more than one engine placed in different parts of the vehicle. Wheeled platforms can have each wheel driven independently by electric motors. The internal combustion engine can have greater flexibility in placement as it will be more as a generator. With each wheel driven independently, damage to one part of the drivetrain has less chance of being critical.
- Improved acceleration and response time. Electric drivetrain tend to respond faster to input.

The exact advantage will depend on the type of hybrid system. Once the technology is sufficient, hybrid military vehicles will be the trend for many platforms.

-In the sound aspect it’s not as big an advantage on a Tracked heavy vehicle. This is as most tracks are multiple links of metal and though not as loud as you might think it’s also about as quiet as a garbage truck.
Power generation is a big bonus as is the ability to sit in over watch well not generating sound.
additionally you also have bonuses of the ability to relocate the engine. You could move it anywhere in the platform or have multiple smaller ones because you don’t need a direct mechanical transmission. That also means fewer parts to repair and maintain.
Military ground vehicles particularly tracked actually favor low end torque which EV give in spades.

Long before the Environmental movement Military vehicle designers were trying to develop Electric drives. In WW2 Porche tried with only limited success to develop a Hybrid Tank The Tiger (p), the second try was the Maus. But even before that the British MkII of WW1 trailed two systems American and French.
Incidentally if you are thinking that sounds really early remember WW1 U boats were hybrids to. The first Hybrid car was all the way back in 1899. And I have a laugh at people who call Electric cars “New” as the First electric car dates to 1859. What prevented that root until the modern era was reliability, safety ( bad habits of bursting into flames, nasty lead acid batteries) and efficiency.

Most of the advantage seems comes from electric drive rather than hybrid itself. I do recognize the advantage of electric drive which would easily overlap with hybrid drive. Guess I was carried away by the rather "civilian" term use.

Have they improved the wiring of the remote weapons station? I remember not long ago there was a video of the Mengshi during an exercise and the wiring to the remote weapons station got disconnected due to recoil.
