Chinese Economics Thread

1. Some have attempted to use satellite images (nightime) to guage the electricity usage. And India came out being "shinier" that China. A lot of Jai Hinds celebrated. I was left wondering the whole point ( or pointlessness) of the exercise. What about Apartments and multi story residences ? How will satellites capture the luminescence of rooms in all levels of floors ?

2. China's informal economy as well as the service sector seem less accounted for still relative to US.

Look at how Chinese light up their cities at night with light shows on building cityscapes. That doesn't register on satellites pics. It's because they manipulate those satellite images to say the very propaganda they use it for. This coming from the people who will outright lie about coronavirus for domestic politics that allows people to die but yet somehow the world is suppose to believe they are honest and true and would never lie. Coronavirus, satellite images, economics, etc... Yeah no one is suppose to add that up to say lying for them is a regular thing. You can see the results in China with better infrastructure than you have in the US. You don't see the results in India. Which came first? Was it Trump that told everyone to not believe what your lying eyes are telling you or was Trump a product of the US telling that to everyone long before him?

It's not a direct comparison. The "logic" was that, more economic activity would mean more lighting ( both at homes and at stores/ offices). The North Korea/ South Korea night satellite shots may be an extreme case of this. But as you said, it is not at all a usable tool for any qualitative purposes. There is a scope for use but can only be found good for a PowerPoint presentation at Victims of Communism gettogether or NED think sessions.
The lighting pictures from space about North Korea is actually false.

They are intentionally making everything dark in North Korea, while in reality there is some light (less than South Korea of course).

Besides the above, the longer post you had about GDP is also wrong on the GLF (tens of millions of dead? lol no).

That isn't my post. It was a comment I lifted from a website i linked. As i mentioned, I saw myself agreeing to many of the opinions expressed in the comment ( not all obv). The particular about GLP may be ignored.

And North Korea indeed faces power cuts. Only Pyongyang seem lit and represented ( as a speck) during night. They don't need to make it dark intentionally but they do sprinkle a bit of schadenfreude and sensationalism.

To add to what that have been mentioned, one thing I can think of is that China prioritizes electricity usage for its industries and factories rather than street lightings because of high demands for electricity that frequently max out its electricity generation capacity like what we have seen happening recently.

The other thing I can think of is that light intensity becomes undetectable by satellites if the lighting is all spread out in a larger area in a big country such as China if compared to let's say South Korea, Taiwan, or even India.

China Can’t Develop Isolated From the World, Xi’s No. 2 Says

China and the world must work together to boost global economic growth, Vice President Wang Qishan said, vowing that Beijing will continue opening up more to foreign investment at a time when more countries are raising barriers over national security concerns.

“China can not develop in isolation of the world and nor can the world develop without China,” Wang said Wednesday at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore. “China will not waver in its resolve to deepen reform and expand opening up.”

Thank god! The Ming and Qing dynasties already tried the path of isolation and it didn't work. The era of Reform & Opening Up 1978-now is far more successful. Good to see Chinese leaders are aware of this. Supporting domestic tech is great, but North Korea-style autarky doesn't work.

I don’t think that it was ever China’s intention to close off foreign tech. It is that access to them is periodically getting shutdown, forcing them to find alternatives.
