Samsung farms out more of its smartphone product line to Chinese ODMs. Not surprised. Many of Samsung's low and midrange phones look similar to the Chinese brands with a Samsung brand tagged on.

Going back in recent times when Samsung stopped doing everything inhouse and began subcontracting to ODMs.

To those who are not familiar what an ODM or Original Device Manufacturer is, the smartphone brands you hear about famously are just brands. The phones are actually designed and built by someone else. The ODMs are the real smartphone manufacturers.
Haha Samsung going back to manufacturing in China? What a twist!

New figures from World Steel Association for September:
  • September 2020, China mainland crude steel production 92,555,000 tons, an increase of 10.9% yr/yr
  • September 2020, China mainland crude steel production makes up 59.2% of the association member total, an increase of 10.9% from same time last year
  • September 2020, China mainland crude steel production increased by 9,108,000 tons yr/yr, rest of the world had a decrease of 4,634,000 tons yr/yr
  • September 2020, India crude steel production 8,520,000 tons, a decrease of 2.9% yr/yr ; Japan crude steel production 6,486,000 tons, a decrease of 19.3% yr/yr ; US crude steel production 5,709,000 tons, a decrease of 18.5% yr/yr ; South Korea crude steel production 5,831,000 tons, an increase of 2.1% yr/yr ; Russia crude steel production 5,860,000 tons, a decrease of 0.8% yr/yr
  • January-September, World Steel Association member total crude steel production 1,347,400,000 tons, a decrease of 3.2% yr/yr
  • January-September, China mainland crude steel production 781,593,000 tons, an increase of 4.5% yr/yr
  • January-September, China mainland crude steel production makes up 58.0% of the association member, an increase of 4.3 from same time last year
  • January-September, China mainland crude steel production increased by 33,457,000 tons, rest of the world crude steel production decreased by 78,265,000 tons
  • January-September, India crude steel production 70,203,000 tons, a decrease of 16.5% yr/yr ; Japan crude steel production 61,208,000 tons, a decrease of 19.1% yr/yr ; US crude steel production 53,462,000 tons, a decrease of 19.2% yr/yr ; South Korea crude steel production 49,632,000 tons, a decrease of 7.5% yr/yr ; Russia crude steel production 53,269,000 tons, a decrease of 1.4% yr/yr
I think South Korea and Russia just jumped ahead of US in monthly steel production. For the year so far China is the only country increasing (and as a result making up an even greater amount of the world's total production)

Instead of by country, I think in the future World Steel Association need to divide the figures three ways:
  • Hebei province
  • Rest of China
  • Rest of the world

Similar thing happens within the car industry I've heard. More than simply sourcing completed engines and transmissions from specialist manufacturers but literally entire interior kits. Even Mercedes get supplied by the same people who supply GM and Ford in the past. The subsurface "brand" simply work with these OEMs.
