Chinese Economics Thread

I think we shouldn't all get to hung up about number 1 status. Or GDP measurement. Yes it is important to show how far China has come in a few decades or indeed since the end of chin dynasty. But we mustn't use it as a dick measuring contest.

China should strive to greater GDP for the improvement of its people and for the defence of her sovereignty and dignity.

We all seen China has suffered in the past two century's at the hands of foreigners because of her relative small GDP.

GDP is only good as measurement for comparison against others. China real GDP as measure in PPP is where the cutting edge is. This is where China gets more bang for it's money.

I agree with you in substance. China should not pursue it for the sake of it. It's just a by-product of China's growing economy. China will get there.

Nevertheless, it's important from a psychological standpoint. The contest between the West and China increasingly has gained a psychological and narrative dimension. China re-claiming back the #1 economy status unquestionably will deal a psychological blow to those who still harbor superiority complex. It'll be a hard-power metric translating into a soft power impact.

Think about the Hong Kong riot last year. We all know what had happened in Hong Kong with all the violence and crimes committed by these rioters, yet the western media continued to indulge in lies and disinformation. What happened in the streets of the US earlier this year are the best rebuttal to these liars and lying media, exposing their falsehood and hypocrisy.

Nah they can just say that China faked the GDP figure by 25% or something.

As this stage of development, China will not be able to grow 10% GDP and should not, which can be harmful in pursuit of too high a target growth rate. It should just do the right thing and the growth will take care of itself.

China's growth is artificially suppressed by the state. Harmful pursuit of high growth would be like the US borrowing 20% of GDP to stimulate.

China needs to remove those unnecessary state functions and decrease taxes. Parts of China do poorly because the talent run to Shenzhen.

It's stuff like this:

I'd like to be able to do research/business without having to waste time trying to get my VPN to work.
That's not evidence; that's an opinion piece on how this person thinks that China can improve from an administrative perspective. Administration is perfect nowhere in the world; if that's the argument, then you'd have to be saying that every government "suppresses" its GDP by failing to realize the potential of perfection.

Every country has its barriers for investment. If operating a VPN software is the biggest issue, then China's got to be the easiest place to do business in the world.

Bravo South Korea. Kudos for standing up to US pressure.

SOUTH KOREA STERNLY REJECTS U.S. PRESSURE TO BAN HUAWEI 5G

EFE UDINOCTOBER 15, 2020

‌‌The U.S. and China have been at loggerheads over multiple issues. Considering the access to information that technology companies hold, Huawei has been in the U.S. spotlight for a long time. The U.S. government believes that any data with Huawei is not safe. It also believes that Huawei is fully under the control of the Chinese government. To this end, it has banned Huawei from its 5G network construction. In addition, it is also using its global influence to convince other countries to also ban Huawei. While many countries have actually banned Huawei, there are still many that do not believe the U.S. resolve.
