China has 4000 troops deployed in Sudan to protect its oil interests. The article baldly states -
A Chinese state-owned company owns 40% of the oil concession in the south of Sudan, and there are reportedly 4,000 Chinese troops there protecting Beijing's oil interests.

I am intrigued and have never heard of any such deployment before, has anyone any further details on this?

If its true it is highly significant as it represents a major Independant Chinese deployment in a foreign country. There are a few hundred Chinese troops in Sudan under the UN banner, but it seems pretty clear that these are not included in the above figure.

Those activities weren't really on my attention, however it seems to be not completely new.

article from Mar-18, '04 said that 4000 armed chinese workers secure oil pipelines:

... David Hale, an economist who specializes in Chinese affairs, warned that the People's Liberation Army has deployed about 4,000 troops to southern Sudan. Hale stated in a recent speech that the Chinese troops are there to protect an oil pipeline.
The news that China is expanding its overseas forces in Sudan comes as no surprise to Eric Reeves, a human-rights activist and Professor at Smith College.
There are certainly a considerable number of Chinese troops or armed workers in southern Sudan, especially in Eastern Upper Nile. This area has been much less accessible than Western Upper Nile, site of the major producing consortium.
But it is also worth nothing that Amnesty International reported (May 2000) that they had received accounts from Western Upper Nile of armed Chinese workers, who appeared ready to use their weapons (see www.amnesty.org)," stated Reeves.
China will continue to search out new supplies of oil for the foreseeable future; petroleum consumption grows by approximately 10% a year, even as the present state of the Chinese economy makes it especially sensitive to volatility in oil prices. They are desperate for secure off-shore oil sources," noted Reeves.
Given China's utterly ruthless behavior in southern Sudan, future extraction ventures-whether in Africa or elsewhere- should be a major human rights concern," said Reeves.
The first link in the chain of Beijing's oppression is to garrison 4,000 troops in Sudan to control the access to oil. The next link is to control the seas in order to acquire the oil. ...

There were also reports that in 2000 700.000 chinese troops were in Sudan to intervene in the civil-war. Couldn't find good confirmation in short.

I could find some reports speaking about that 2004 deployment, but nothing new on that topic.

But there are several reports of the relation of the countries. Sudan is one of Chinas biggest oil suppliers, while China is the main weapons supplier to Sudan. I think recently the chinese UN embassador said there are long time good relations between the two countries.

700,000 troops??? With the logistical capabilities of the PLAN? You're joking right?

Security contractors protecting oil interests are not a new thing. Just because it's a Chinese with a gun doesn't automatically make it the PLA.

Maybe 700 or 7000 workers..not 700,000 troops. As stated the PLA does not have the ablity to sustain such a deployed force.

US Necons & alarmist have claimed some years ago that there were PLA troops in Mexico! This is laughable..

Private Security firms would not be worthy of a mention, but the article strongly indicates that it is refering to serving PLA troops under Beijing Political control.

I am not familiar with Time magazine and therefore do not know how credible an organ it is and how much integrity its journalism is credited with.

I know there are American security firms in Iraq providing security in certain non-combative situations.

Time magizine is a very crediable source of news and information. It has been published weekly since 1923. It's reporters and writers have won several Putlizer prizes. It is also partnered with CNN.

I had a subscription to "Time" when I was in high school.

PLA in Mexico? Are they sure it's not the immigrants in Tiajuana.........

Would China even need 700000 troops to protect its oil interests there? I doubt so.... :rollin:

It is predicted that China wll send soldiers into Mexico to protect oil interests. I can't find any sources for now, but I remember reading this from somewhere... But anyway, I think it'll probably happen when American-Mexican relations are becoming a strain.

I am not sure about the 4000 troops in Sudan, but I did read the article quoted. It pointed to serious issues China is faced with. But as far as an introduction to the new development of a reasonably large oriental country and an analysis of the impact of it are concerned, I would say it presents partial facts to advance a theme the author had predefined before begining to write. It is so typical of the American media. They only focus on what happens to 0.001% of the China's population and ignores the rest. I am not say that the 0.001% is just ignorable. I'm saying that ignoring 99.999% is not a proper thing to do. It is curious how the "free media" is so unanimous when it comes to reporting what's going on in China.

This is not irrelevant to this forum this theme. The "China threat" BS is just a legend so created. Everytime I read somthing like "American experts estimate Red China will wipe off Taiwan's defense in 48 hours", my blood pressure rises and the word "conspiracy" pops up in my head.

Perhaps you should take out the crystal ball again to see if the writing is still there.
