Temperatures dropped to as low as -20 C recently in Harbin, Heilongjiang province. But the extreme cold and strong winds sweeping the frozen Songhua River couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of winter swimming enthusiasts.

China's consumption momentum remained robust during the New Year holiday due to effective control of COVID-19 cases.

During the three-day New Year holiday, offline consumption in Shanghai reached 27.08 billion yuan ($4.26 billion), up 12.8 percent year-on-year, according to the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai).

The sales of department stores, supermarkets, specialty stores, restaurants and e-commerce enterprises monitored by Beijing Municipal Bureau of Commerce reached 3.89 billion yuan, up 18.8 percent year-on-year during the same period.

BEIJING - Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, inspected the preparations for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing on Tuesday.





Xi visited the National Speed Skating Oval, Main Media Center, Athletes' Village, Games-time Operations Command Center and a winter sports training base, learning about Games preparatory work as well as Chinese athletes' preparations for the Games.



Xi also extended New Year greetings to athletes, coaches, volunteers and representatives of operation teams, media and scientific research staff.

The 2022 Winter Olympics will take place from February 4 to 20, followed by the Paralympic Winter Games from March 4 to 13.

With a history of more than 100 years of lantern-making, the village has become a well-known production, distribution and marketing center. There are around 20 factories and 1,000 workers involved in the industry there.



As many as 2 million lanterns can be produced annually, with an output value of 200 million yuan ($31.4 million).

Around 95 percent of food ingredients at the Village are domestically produced, with only a small portion of foreign-exclusive ingredients imported. Western cuisine takes up for around 70 percent to better accommodate foreign athletes.
